I have been working at Bio-Rad Laboratories full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good benefits and work culture in a growth industry with lots of opportunity and room for improvement.

    Cons

While the industry is evolving quickly, Bio-Rad is a mature company with fairly entrenched ideas and culture so change can be slow.

    Advice to Management

Keep heading in the same direction - things are aligning nicely.

I worked at Bio-Rad Laboratories full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Decent Cafe on campus, Decent Campus, Adequate Parking. Near Safeway, Chase, WestCat Lynx, etc - it's making me write 20 words. This place is a prison!

    Cons

I wish I could just say my commute since I travel with traffic:

Sexist supervisors, Incompetent supervisors, absentee Customer Care Manager, overworked phone crew. You only advance here if you know someone who knows someone higher. If you want a job with a bit of stability, don't come here.

EVERYBODY IS FAKING IT UNTIL THEY MAKE IT!

    Advice to Management

Look further into your Customer Care Management if you care enough about us. It switched hands before I left and has gone downhill. If LSG is a great division, why would you bring CDG Supervisors who don't care to know anything about our products to Hercules? You have a manager who does not care to show up. They are deceitful, lazy and don't care to show up to work EVER! They put their work onto their employees and take the credit from under them. They rely on interoffice tattletales and pay them extra to keep their mouths shut. I pray over my colleagues daily that they don't give it to the brainwashing your new team is trying to put into place.

I worked at Bio-Rad Laboratories full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Ample parking, cafeteria, vending machines.

    Cons

Top-down neglectful management style breeds distrustful, vampire like work environment. If you can stay out of the fray and keep your head in the sand, you're ok to retire from this place. Nepotistic, credit is never given. Suggestions to the status quo are squashed. If you speak up, the vampirical management will find a way to oust you without dignity and in the most hideous way. Perfect workplace experience if you're curious about getting into recovery.

    Advice to Management

Doesn't appear there is interest in acting on advice for a cross management overhaul for improvement.

    Pros

Very solid scientists in R&D. Good work/life balance. Always someone to help you out if you speak up. Stock doing well lately. Family owned business, so the CEO Norm really takes his responsibility personally.

    Cons

OMG, stop being so cheap! If you want to save operating costs, don't cut from journal access/IT infrastructure/Admin support. Those things make a well-informed, smooth running company, now you're wasting half your FTEs on IT glitches and lack of computing power. Get some pros into your upper and upper middle management, not just promote "nice" people who don't have experience outside of Bio-Rad.

    Advice to Management

Import real talent in Business Development/marketing and let them do their thing! Have more cultural awareness training, half the time people are not communicating properly. Overhaul marketing, they're headless right now.

I have been working at Bio-Rad Laboratories full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great teammates - almost like family despite having terrible managers running the team. Commute is opposite of traffic. Nice restrooms. Great parking. Nice campus to walk around. Awesome holiday parties.

    Cons

No WFH option. 401k could be better. Managers are never around. Dress code. Matin Luther King's birthday is not considered a holiday.

    Advice to Management

Management seems very inexperienced and lack any direction. Rather than talking down to your team or talking about team members to other team members, why not build them up and be transparent with them as a group? Be fair to your team. If you're able to work from home, let your entire team have that option as well. When your team close sizable deals, perhaps give them a little bit more recognition. Also, when a team member is looking to grow with the company, do not take it as a threat. Help them grow by pointing them in the right direction instead of "dissolving" their positions and placing them on the lowest end of the totem pole in other departments.

As far as working with other departments like Marketing, Tech Support, Customer Care, Recruiting, etc... try leaving your personal opinions/feelings about the managers running those teams at home. Your whole team does not need to know why you are not willing to work with these departments. Just because you simply don't 'like' the managers should not be a reason why we can not work in harmony with them. Your lack of willingness to work with them is the reason why their is no improvement in some of them team's process. Keep it professional!

    Pros

None to give, other that to keep looking.

    Cons

Worked in the Customer Care Division. Incompetent management Upper and Mid level. Petty, unprofessional ,back stabling caustic environment.A lot of nepotism. You would swear that Hitler was running the place.

    Advice to Management

Bring in professional people to manage that know how to work with people. That may help to make the environment more pleasant. Get ride of the negative people that run the department based on fear and the feeling that big brother is always watching. That type of management style doesn't bring about positive results.

"Bio-Rad's Growing Pains Equal Low Employee Morale"

I have been working at Bio-Rad Laboratories full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The campus is very beautiful, and the majority of the employees are cordial and helpful. In the past, Bio-Rad has actively promoted from within which has obvious benefits, such as career growth, but the downside is that many people are promoted because of loyalty or favor with executive management rather than demonstrated capabilities and competencies. Now, Bio-Rad is hiring managers and directors from other companies. Although they may have the competencies, some are not adapting well with the corporate culture; Bio-Rad does have a unique corporate culture.

    Cons

Although Bio-Rad was founded over 60 years ago, it is going through growing pains and behaves like a "start-up". The growing pains come from the company consolidating various global business operation systems (ERPs) into one: SAP. It has been PAINFUL! Despite business representatives stating requirements, many were NOT incorporated which means that when SAP launched, there were many gaps. We created work-arounds upon work-arounds which led to inefficiency. This has happened with the launch of another global database that the Support and Service centers use. Poor business practices and invalid data led to lots of problems. New mandatory fields lead to delays and a negative impact to the Support and Service teams.
It appears that Bio-Rad doesn't devote resources where needed (hence, a start-up mentality), and it keeps accepting sub-par systems.
Despite a great financial 2016 year, we are being asked to do much more with less people. That is counter-intuitive, and I don't feel valued or appreciated. Management say they will listen to employees stating an "open door" policy, but that's not really the case. I know of fellow employees who are being punished (overtly and covertly) for expressing their opinions. Because of that, most employees stay quiet. However, that isn’t sustainable – many employees in the marketing department have left the company.
Finally, Bio-Rad states that they are “harmonizing” globally. That sounds nice, but the reality is that Bio-Rad is becoming a diagnostics company and enforcing diagnostics processes and requirements onto the research use only part of the business. That’s a heavy burden and price to pay for customers and a part of the business where those requirements are not necessary. Instead of a black-n-white or all-or-nothing approach, there needs to be a more reasonable and sensible approach.

    Advice to Management

    1. Stop using the word “harmonizing” because it’s insulting.
    2. Exemplify the “I” that Bio-Rad says they espouse: Integrity. Treat employees with integrity.
    3. Stop accepting systems that do not meet our needs.
    4. Bring back leadership coaching and development.
    5. HR needs to do a better job of monitoring Managers' behaviors and advocating for employees. If they did, then maybe employee morale wouldn’t be so low.
    6. Admit that the clinical way of operating is neither the only nor the best way to carry out business. Ask questions, listen intently, ask some more questions to deepen your understanding, then work with your supervisors and managers to create the best process.
