I worked at Bio-Rad Laboratories full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Developing new technologies, some creative projects to work on

    Cons

Work load is very heavy. There was a lot of politics. Management only promote people who are good at talking but not doing any work. Usually manager will give all the work to the people who are not very outspoken, and let his or her favorite employee to speak up the data. Plus, there is discrimination against women and minority. Management is hard to communicate. And they are good at REVENGE people. If you say anything different from their thinking, they will either uninvited you to all the meetings or take you off from all high profile projects and just give you labor work to do. Also the management has very strict rule of being " on time", if employee is 5 min late for a meeting, he or she will be given a " bad face" from the manager. However, the manager can be late for 20 or 30 min for a meeting and " no show"! And the management jealous of talents. There was a real case that a former employee solved a technical problem but his solution is not the same as the management's idea, so his work is not acknowledged. His method is used in production but his name can not be mentioned in any internal meetings. No credit at all. If the employee is sick and come to work, the manager usually will give the employee a " you are contiguous and stay away from me" look, which made people felt very disrespectful. It is a place values " politics, sweet talk, flatter your boss" but not " hard working, honesty and being creative" . You will get a lot of negative experience if you work there. If you are not favored, you will be put into the "dog house" most of the time. If you are favored, you will get some chance to speak at internal meetings and get some credits. However, remember no matter you are favored or not, the managers don't care you either way. All the employees are just the tools for the managers to climb up the cooperate ladder. An awful place to work. Also if you are women or minority, don't go there. This company also fire people quite often and most time they won't tell people why those people got fired.

    Advice to Management

Learn how to respect people who work for you first. Don't put " climbing up cooperate ladder" as your primary career goal. Create more trustworthy, honest, friendly working environment. Respect talents. Please don't value good employee as " Submissive and always say "yes" to boss and " respect manager's authority" . Please don't manipulate date to claim credits from upper management. Please value " collaboration between teams" rather than " give hard time to others when they ask for data or ask for resource.

    I worked at Bio-Rad Laboratories full-time

    Pros

Stable, family feel, and easy commute

    Cons

Horrible management skills, zero transparency, no one has your back and you must CYA. Leadership lacks diversity and is stale. Company does not inspire creativity, nor do they encourage innovation. Morale is on a decline because of the daily criticism and negative feedback, especially when you are a strong performer.

    Advice to Management

Diversify, train new managers, say THANK YOU a few times a year!!

I have been working at Bio-Rad Laboratories full-time

    Pros

    - The Digital Biology Center - Pleasanton has interesting and challenging work for engineers, programmers, and (computational) biologists
    - Diverse group of friendly people
    - High-tech product line with excellent brand recognition
    - Affordable health care plans
    - Good company core values

    Cons

    - Micromanagement is prevalent
    - Technical people are constantly leaving, often not by choice
    - Inadequate resources ($, people) to get work done leads to lots of required heroism
    - Start-up culture - long hours are expected but not rewarded - poor work/life balance (some groups more than others)
    - Chaotic management frequently leads to lost hard work/effort, a chronic state of emergency, and lack of long-term planning
    - Poor benefits relative to other Bay Area companies in terms of 401k matching and PTO instead of vacation + sick days

    Advice to Management

Stop micromanaging and start investing that energy into better long-term planning

    I worked at Bio-Rad Laboratories full-time

    Pros

I worked at BR for 12 years on the Life Science side and most of it was great. I had the opportunity to try a lot of different roles across the company, eventually being promoted to a functional manager level. The people were great to work with. Sure, there were frustrations, but if you were patient, and articulate, you could get support to get many problems solved. I finally left to try something new and different, but I look back on those years fondly, for the most part.

    Cons

It has changed a lot since I left (all new executive management), but when I was there, people struggled to align on a cohesive strategy. Silos were an issue between business units, though less so in R&D. Not much investment in innovation.

    Advice to Management

My advice may be outdated, but here it goes.... I hope there is a focus on a long term strategy now, perhaps even a strategic planning process that works. I hope management has the courage to trim off he dead wood (people and products), in spite of sunk cost. Remove the R&D managers who think you are an R&D-driven company, because if you are R&D driven, you will not achieve your goals. Finally, if you allow some positions to be remote at least a few days/week, you will greatly expand your hiring pool.

    Pros

Even during the recession, Bio-Rad was a stable company. There was no fear of layoffs as companies all around the Bay Area.

    Cons

Slow to adopt new technology. Some of my co-workers who worked in technology there, left out of fear that their skills would become outdated.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the workers in the "trenches". They are the ones who make the company successful.
