I have been working at BioMarin Pharmaceutical full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    New facilities
Can pay well (due to turnover and long commute times)
    Lots of free foods

    Cons

Reputation of a sweat shop is very real
    Finance/accounting department is a mess......unhappy, overworked zombies
TOP HEAVY.....too many Directors (most are bitter and unsupportive)
    Bully mentality
Churn and burn staff below Director......truly sad to see so many talented people leave
Leads to an overreliance on contractors (telltale sign they have retention a problem)

    Advice to Management

Time to purge the folks running the finance departments.......rotten to the core. Only then will you be able to stop hemorrhaging staff

I worked at BioMarin Pharmaceutical as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Good mission to develop orphan drugs and, good science to back it up.

    Cons

A Sr Scientist took my Nobel Idea and, presented as her idea. When complained to her and my manager, my contract was terminated. I talk about this, including her name, to every Scientist I meet. Our community is not very big so, the words spread fast!

    Advice to Management

Heads up! Corruption bankrupts any organization by destroying the trust.

You need to stop fostering the bullying culture among your managers

I worked at BioMarin Pharmaceutical full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Good benefits
Great pay (which is still not worth working with the executive's personalities )
    Free food all the time
    Decent tech

    Cons

You are basically selling your soul to the devil . Expect to be on call 24/7. The top executives have horrific, abusive personalities and enjoy flexing their "power" with ridiculous demands and basically treating everyone else who works there like a peon.

    Advice to Management

Overhaul the 4th floor. There may be 5 decent top executives, but the rest are extremely ugly to your employees. How these people can get away with treating other humans the way that they do, tells you exactly how BioMarin operates. There is back stabbing, gossip, abuse and every other ugly personality trait you can think of, and these are the types that are picked to rise to the top.

I worked at BioMarin Pharmaceutical (Less than a year)

    Pros

It is not located in crowded silicon valley so, it's easy to commute! There are a free lunch every other week and, that would save underpaid associates who are usually the minorities few bocks a month.

    Cons

Senior management's sheer discrimination made me leave BioMarin. My invention was given to an underperform scientist to gain credit. They broke every decency and roles that govern scientific community, took information from me verbally in a corner of the hallway and, presented the data officially, in a cross company meeting without giving me any credit.

    Advice to Management

Clean up the corrupt culture at BioMarin!

I have been working at BioMarin Pharmaceutical full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

You can still run into good people with great knowledge and nice to work with! Chances are rare. Most of them left the company already!

    Cons

    1. San Rafael office is almost getting rid of racism. Getting there!
    2. So many free riders here---Spending the company money on "business trip", "talking" a lot during meetings, looks like "I am working".
    3. Mid level managers are poisoning and toxic. Many of them are lacking of knowledge of what they are doing and unwilling to help.

    Advice to Management

Open eyes? But it is so hard for them.

I worked at BioMarin Pharmaceutical full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good Benefits, average pay, stock options, ESPP, and mostly friendly people at individual contributor level.

    Cons

Orwellian like work culture, there is a lot of whispering and looking over your shoulder. Many business procedures were justified by what "seems to work" and not necessarily what was the most productive and/or efficient way of accomplishing tasks. Management often sets unreasonable timelines, creating high levels anxiety within project teams. Management is unclear in communicating what the objectives or timelines of project are, which lead to confusion and frustraton. Project teams seem to be in a constant battle for resources and attention. Also, poor work-life balance, over inflated titles that don't mean much, and very unprofessional work environment where bad behavior is ignored by management.

    Pros

Good product pipeline, great people at the 'worker bee' level.

    Cons

Worst upper management ever experienced, talk a good game but no reality. JJ is loosing focus of orphan products and going for the almighty dollar. Was a good place to work but no longer cares about patients or employees.

    Advice to Management

look to the past to see what a great company BMRN 'used' to be.

I have been working at BioMarin Pharmaceutical full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, pay is decent. There is on site gym at two locations. There used to be lunch every Friday, but that got cut to save money for management bonuses.

    Cons

Extremely top heavy. Management is unsupportive, leaves work at 4pm the latest, does not communicate to lower levels, does not ask for feedback, does not reward top performers, but schmoozers. Offsite courses and training is openly discouraged because of "lack of funds this year", but we have money to fund all the pointless and childish coolers.

Accountability is on worker, not on management. With few exceptions Directors are not involved in projects. Contractors manage and execute projects leaving a mess since there is lack of ownership feel.

HR is there for show. Again mostly directors managing directors. No low ranks. Check out the org chart if you don't believe me.

    Advice to Management

Nothing to say... because they will not listen constructive feedback. It will keep going like this until it spills over. Time to look elsewhere.
