I have been working at BioMarin Pharmaceutical full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Excellent benefits, including generous vacation and holiday policy. Modern offices in downtown San Rafael. Free parking and close to public transportation. Proximity to San Francisco.

    Cons

Some departments exhibit larger than average employee turn-over rate.

    Advice to Management

Spend more time and resources bringing existing employees up the ranks rather than hiring from the outside.

I worked at BioMarin Pharmaceutical full-time

    Pros

Products help children that would otherwise have no hope. Nice, friendly people, good benefits.

    Cons

Commute to Marin County, disparate working relationships, Executive Management doesn't get it, seems to be a good ole boys network.

    Advice to Management

Perform 360 performance reviews on your management teams, take a walk around and talk to your employees to see what is going on.

I have been working at BioMarin Pharmaceutical full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good drugs helping very underserved patients.

    Cons

Management is a mess. There are entire departments that add no value but seem to keep growing because their leaders are tight with people at the top. The company has reached the "brightsizing" stage of dysfunction - a lot of very valuable people have left in the past 12 months, and we're not seeing that level of replacements come in.

The goal to surviving at BioMarin has become cutting corners and crossing your fingers in order to meet impossible timelines.

    Advice to Management

Ground up overhauls are desperately needed in clinical operations and biometrics. We've got 5x more project managers than we need. The solution to every problem has to stop being "everyone should just work faster".

There will be a major mistake at some point that kills patients or stops a drug approval - let's fix the problems now before that happens.

I worked at BioMarin Pharmaceutical full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

People overall are nice but conventional, which isn't unexpected for industry. Worthwhile development targets. Decent pay. Respect for family life for the most part. Remote work flexibility.

    Cons

Disarray, management backbiting and backstabbing in front of staff, unprofessional behavior by many in upper management.

    Advice to Management

Get some SOPs in place; ensure compliance with laws; expect and require professional behavior, from the top; clean out inept placeholders.

I have been working at BioMarin Pharmaceutical full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    *good people
*culture and work ethics are great
    *everything is science based
*a lot of investment in new technologies
    *very nice environment (offices etc
*a fair amount of investment in hiring people

    Cons

    *Fast paced environment
*Due to fast paced environment some things/processes are not optimally planned (probably happens often in the industry)
*hard work is required (can be also seen as positive sometimes)

    Advice to Management

Set clear long term objectives business-wide and adhere to manufacturing schedule (although understandable that it is hard in such a fast paced environment)

I worked at BioMarin Pharmaceutical full-time

    Pros

Competitive salaries and benefits. Huge bonus

    Cons

Biomarin EU was a good place to work for some years ago. The unfortunate missteps by a former EU-VP being non compliant led to new leadership and area directors in the EU and a restructuring in 2012 and the promise of better products to come over time. The EU department got only more political and executives/regional directors playing favorites. Not an open culture in EU countries as being honest with your manager got you punished by layoffs. Closed atmosphere by people who dislike their managers, but they don't want to leave as they're being trapped in a golden cage. I remember a meeting where the price of an overpriced drug just went higher per minute for no rational reason at all, just because they thought they could charge that amount of money and drain it out of the EU governmental systems.

    Advice to Management

All employees deserve to be treated respectfully and with dignity. Treat employees with as much care as you treat patients.
