A great company in a mediocre city

Oct 2, 2013 - Software Engineer in Edmonton, AB

    Pros

Good work-life balance. A lot of employees are older, with kids; as a result, the focus is on sustainable work practices rather than a bunch of twenty-somethings competing to see who can work the most hours in a week. Although crunch does occur now and then, the company makes an effort to minimize it. Lots of friendly, intelligent coworkers. Generous time off allowance at Christmas. Free breakfast. Plenty of opportunities to work on high-profile, AAA projects. Good job security; although there have been selected layoffs, BioWare has largely been unaffected by sweeping cuts. The studio general manager, Aaryn Flynn is a genuinely nice guy who cares about his employees. Alberta has the lowest tax rate in all of Canada.

    Cons

Edmonton is an ugly, boring city. The winters are cold, dark and long -- and as a result, BioWare has a tough time recruiting new talent. There is no significant "tech" presence in the city; if you get laid off, your only other option is to go work for the oilfield. Cost of living in Edmonton is high (although not as high as say, Vancouver.) Salaries are lower than what you could be making elsewhere.

    Tough, great place to work

    Pros

BioWare develops great games, has a solid team, and supports their employees. Few other employers offer a similar challenge and scope of work.

    Cons

Crushing schedules, face paced work environment can be overwhelming. Occasionally employees get railroaded into working on projects outside of their job description.

One of the best game companies out there

    Dec 13, 2016 - 3D Artist in Montreal, QC

    Pros

-Bioware cares about its employees. Benefits are nice, and Bioware has a good life and work balance( of course there is always crunch when the game is at its final stage.) -Most of the time , the higher ups listen to our feedback. -Aim for a very high quality game. -When the game needs more time, most of the time is given by EA to ensure Bioware ships great titles. -Friendly work environment. -Very open to trying new 3D software to improve the pipeline. -Employees are actually rewarded and recognized for doing exceptional work. -I have been working in the industry for almost 12 years in a few companies, I can assure Bioware is one of the best one overall. -A lot of very talented people in the industry working for Bioware. It's a great feeling when you can trust your co worker to have the common goal to deliver great product.

    Cons

-Politics. But I have been in the industry long enough to know politics exists at every game studio. Bioware has the least amount of it.

    Not amazing, but pretty good.

    Pros

Working at Bioware I have had the opportunity to work on some fantastic projects with some really amazing and passionate people. Most days I look forward to going into the office and sometimes I get so involved in my work that I end up staying late. There is a real sense that everyone want's to do the best they can to produce the best games possible. The feeling of shipping AAA games can be quite rewarding. Edmonton is actually a nice city with close proximity to Jasper National Park. Fairly good studio culture.

    Cons

Mediocre pay / Poor employee evaluation program. People tend to get pigeon holed into doing one thing which really limits personal opportunities for growth. Studio is becoming increasingly political and corporate. The studio is in a really poor location of the city.

A stimulating company that focuses on quality of life over speed of production.

    Pros

Food, comfort, and happy people. BioWare is a comfortable placele placele place to work and a happy environment. You must find a healthy place in the corporate structure where creativity is allowed to thrive and corporate needs are sheltered by strong leads. There are some really creative people at BioWare, and it is an absolutely amazing environment to wet one's feet or season one's skills.

    Cons

The large corporate mogul of EA opens doors but closes independent thought. Only on the micro-level may creativity thrive, for revolutionary ideas that can be iterated on rapidly in a small company setting turn into months-long trudge of certification, documentation, and stagnation. Long "assembly-line" like production pipelines turn great ideas into watered-down results, quashing the desire for creativity into production, as the outcome of both becomes identical.

Creative work in an environment of worsening office politics

    Oct 26, 2012 - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

Creative work, large challenges to solve. Most co-workers are great, and people are always interested in what is being worked on currently.

    Cons

Since EA's purchase of BioWare, new executives and office politics greatly decreased the fun of working there. Building good teams and helping people fulfill their potential has taken a back seat to office politics unfortunately.

    Culture of Excellence

    Business Outlook

    Pros

BioWare rewards hard work and dedication with opportunity and growth. BioWare goes out of their way to make employees work-life comfortable and collaborative. Chance to work alongside worldclass teams, such as VFX, Character Art, Level Art and Cinematics.

    Cons

Often BioWare is the target of wrongful assumptions and scrutiny.

    Great Work Culture in Games

Sep 23, 2018 - Intern in Austin, TX
    Recommend

    Business Outlook

    Pros

BioWare has a great work culture, especially considering it's in the infamously hard-working games industry. The developers there are great to work with, and being under the Electronic Arts umbrella gives you access to teams across the world. The teams across the BioWare studios all collaborate very well. Some interns were given full, genuine projects to helm themselves from start to finish, as opposed to 'intern work' that people usually expect.

    Cons

Working under Electronic Arts can be demoralizing if you like to read public opinion. If you're looking to put in a lot of passion and above-and-beyond effort into your work, not many of your coworkers will join you in that.
