I worked at Biogen as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

Pay and benefits, even for interns, are very good. Working for Biogen also gives you the chance to work alongside some of the most talented individuals in the industry. Biogen is a fun company to work for because they have a silly amount of money to throw around to keep their employees happy. There is free food and beer every week, summer hours available, and flexible work schedules, just to name a few.

    Cons

There seems to be a large gap between upper management and individual contributors/managers. Often times employees feel more in the dark about the company's future than members of the public.

There is also a big issue with keeping and fostering the talent that they have. Biogen is great at hiring some of the best people available, but makes little or no effort to keep them around, and favors external hires over growing talent from within.

    Pros

Many resources at one's disposal, an emphasis on collaboration, friendly and supportive coworkers, great pay

    Cons

It takes time to implement new ideas, management does not take full use of employees input in making innovations

    Advice to Management

Take more advantage of your employees skills for innovation and staying relevat

I worked at Biogen as a contractor (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Weston location if they keep it has good parking. If you like leftover meeting food at 2pm you're in luck.

    Cons

Inner structure changes eventually phased out internal IT for more expensive, but less legal risk foreign workers.

    Advice to Management

    You should hire American.

I worked at Biogen full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Well located at Cambridge

    Cons

Mid-level managers have favorites and thus performance ratings are biased. More work assignments , less career growth.

I worked at Biogen as a contractor (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great environment, interesting fulfilling job, awesome co-workers.

    Cons

The company changed a lot over the last few years. Upper management does not seem to appreciate hard working people anymore and opt for a cheaper offshore workforce.

    Advice to Management

Focus on quality of work, not perceived low cost of offshore labor force.

I worked at Biogen full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Excellent culture in Bio 2, great work / life balance, management really cared about their people

    Cons

it became cost prohibitive to manufacture biologics in Cambridge so they sold the building

    Pros

Good compensation and benefits, great location.

    Cons

A lot of change, layoffs and constant reorganization.

    Advice to Management

Stop make phony statements like "Care deeply and work fearlessly".

I have been working at Biogen full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Starting salary, work life balance, benefits, vacation and sabbatical program

    Cons

Advancement is slow in the junior scientific positions (min 2 years), not meritocratic but based on seniority, many senior leadership come here when they are ready to stop advancing, IT is awful - very advanced in science, limited by IT, HR has antiquated policies that make top talent leave rather than develop internally, job titles are meaningless - range for someone with 2-4 years experience could go from entry level on the science side to manager in a commercial area (get this - pay ranges are the same)

    Advice to Management

Fix HR so that the employees who want to advance (and most of the value) don't have to leave to get what they want. This leaves just the complacent there for the long term.

Either decide that IT should be internal or outsourced. The time it takes to use the software and computers we have for science literally takes up 50% of people's time. The people in IT are just documenting things all the time and not delivering any value. Most of the increases in efficiency could come from moderate spend, but IT is unwilling to acknowledge sunk cost of legacy platforms. Our software is 15 years behind our science.

I have been working at Biogen full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great benefits; access to training and development. Very competitive pay. Wonderful people below senior execs who really care about patients and world class Dev Organization

    Cons

New CEO is killing off what was great. McKinsey is running the show and people fear more layoffs. The executive team is totally out of touch with what is really happening. It's very sad. No one dares dissent.

    Advice to Management

    Go back to Merck
