I have been working at Biogen full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great benefits and people. Good culture at face value if only everyone lived it. Could be good again, the potential is still there. Very green and environmentally conscious company

    Cons

Leadership, lack of global harmonization, people, systems becoming antiquated, its not what you know its who you know, what have you done for lately

    Advice to Management

People are listed as both a pro and a con in my review. Take that to heart and weed out the bad eggs. You have a great company but there are too many hangers on and people operating above their knowledge and experience level. Time for new blood that shares the company's ambition and goals!

I have been working at Biogen full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Starting salary, work life balance, benefits, vacation and sabbatical program

    Cons

Advancement is slow in the junior scientific positions (min 2 years), not meritocratic but based on seniority, many senior leadership come here when they are ready to stop advancing, IT is awful - very advanced in science, limited by IT, HR has antiquated policies that make top talent leave rather than develop internally, job titles are meaningless - range for someone with 2-4 years experience could go from entry level on the science side to manager in a commercial area (get this - pay ranges are the same)

    Advice to Management

Fix HR so that the employees who want to advance (and most of the value) don't have to leave to get what they want. This leaves just the complacent there for the long term.

Either decide that IT should be internal or outsourced. The time it takes to use the software and computers we have for science literally takes up 50% of people's time. The people in IT are just documenting things all the time and not delivering any value. Most of the increases in efficiency could come from moderate spend, but IT is unwilling to acknowledge sunk cost of legacy platforms. Our software is 15 years behind our science.

I have been working at Biogen full-time

    Pros

The company is working on some amazing products that will change lives- its easy to get behind the mission. To it's credit, the company puts the patient at the center of decision making. With success, the company has resources and uses them to provide a great roster of benefits. The place is very female-friendly with more than 50% of the workforce female.

    Cons

There is way too much going on. With changing leadership, changing product mix, and changing priorities, the company is swirling. The churn limits opportunities for career growth and development- no one knows what they will be working on over the next year which means they don't know how to staff their teams. People get pigeon holed in their roles and its hard to find new opportunities in the company. Managers do not make time for informational chats so its hard to know what's out there.

    Advice to Management

Set a direction, stick to it. Develop clear priorities and allow people to staff their teams to deliver. Stick with an organizational structure and build a pipeline for developing talent that makes people want to stay

    Pros

Great drugs and good pipeline for the future. Interesting potential if research pans out. Competitive compensation and benefits. Cambridge location is good.

    Cons

Difficult culture in some departments. Rapid growth has not always been matched with maturity in process and systems. Very Biogen centric approach vs. openness to outside ideas.
