    Pros

Overall really great people and interesting science. Really enjoyed coming to work and working with such talent colleagues. Also great comp and benefits.

    Cons

I was at Biogen six years and the place changed dramatically (for the worse). The politics at the executive level got vicious and once George announced he was leaving, this made things worse. The company has gotten away from the science and teamwork that made it successful. Plus they have backtracked on diversity with many of the recent senior departures being women--so it is back to being a boys club. I’d stay away until see what direction new CEO takes.

    Advice to Management

Bring Biogen back to what made its culture special and focus on the science not the politics

I worked at Biogen full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Free lunches
    Thirsty Thursdays happy hour weekly
    Great coffee throughout
    Decent benefits
    Parking is a perk
    Located near good restaurants

    Cons

Limited talent pool across functions, especially outside of neuro
Uninspiring management from top to bottom
Best people have left or were fired; large chunk of workforce are there to punch the clock
    Outsourcing has impacted quality
    Morale is woeful

    Advice to Management

Reboot. Purge senior leaders especially those at VP & SVP who have been writing the script for far too long. Stop dabbling in disease areas outside of neuro - it is painful to watch given the limited talent pool. Get tougher with the pontificating jokers and give Assoc to Sr Directors freedom to make decisions. Also time to grow up and cut back in the free food and drink...and the "summer hours" which leads to a serious lack of productivity from June to Sept. Or keep it up and get bought by a real company that wants the few assets in the pipeline.

    Good compensation
    World wide scope
Plenty of open desks, pick your favorite!

    Cons

    No stability
    Absent leadership
    Near continual reorganization
Chases stick price by laying people off to reduce OpEx and make things look better
Many high quality people let go/left

    Advice to Management

Show leadership. Truly appreciate employees rather than just say you do.

    Pros

Most people not in IT were great, most IT techs were hard working, though under trained. Good culture, Harvard U Fellows were outstanding.

    Cons

Much IT management was incredibly unqualified for their positions. Mac support was amateurish at best. lots of back stabbing. "teacher pets", arrogance and blame shifting.

    Advice to Management

If most of those people are still there, Then just pack it in. because nothing I could say here will make a difference

    Pros

Great drugs and good pipeline for the future. Interesting potential if research pans out. Competitive compensation and benefits. Cambridge location is good.

    Cons

Difficult culture in some departments. Rapid growth has not always been matched with maturity in process and systems. Very Biogen centric approach vs. openness to outside ideas.

I worked at Biogen full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Nice infrastructure. Well constructed and well run. Good validation and compliance documentation systems.

    Cons

Terrible management. Almost everyone in R&D IT had only 6 months tenure when I arrived, even the VP. It was eerie. I've never worked at a place with so few people with any tenure greater than 2 years. They didn't seem to have much respect for pharma industry experience, just protecting existing turf. It was like a ghost town that was just coming back to life. It seemed like almost everyone there was still "finding their legs". Maybe in a few years people will start to coalesce as teams, but there was little teamwork training for new people. Very few people knew where IT was really going. 11% employee layoffs followed 3 months later. IT was hit hard, and so were many senior scientists.

    Advice to Management

Clean up management, especially IT. Get business analysts and engineers with long term industry experience who know how to build good relationships with customers.

    Pros

You do have the Ability to work from home a couple of days a week. You are given ample vacation to take but must be taken the same year it is granted.

    Cons

Leadership needs to be shaken up. Management structure needs work. There is no transparency in the company. Growth and movement is limited.

    Advice to Management

Look at the work structures and consider growing and developing all your people before bringing in new people.

Former Employee - Director in Cambridge, MA
Former Employee - Director in Cambridge, MA

I worked at Biogen full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good drugs but very risky strategy as no one has car urge Alzheimer's puzzle yet. Lots of smart scientists so if someone is going to do it, Biogen might be the one.

    Cons

Uber political environment where what you know or can do is not nearly as important as who you know or where you are in the org.

    Advice to Management

With The current CEO leaving and the company about the split into two points Biogen could be in for a very wild ride. The pipeline risk only adds to the uncertainty facing the company and some recent moves makes it look like it may be setting itself up to be sold to another company.

Start to focus on what is really important. Human resources is a joke - instead of being the conscience of the company they are puppets.
