I have been working at Biogen full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Starting salary, work life balance, benefits, vacation and sabbatical program

    Cons

Advancement is slow in the junior scientific positions (min 2 years), not meritocratic but based on seniority, many senior leadership come here when they are ready to stop advancing, IT is awful - very advanced in science, limited by IT, HR has antiquated policies that make top talent leave rather than develop internally, job titles are meaningless - range for someone with 2-4 years experience could go from entry level on the science side to manager in a commercial area (get this - pay ranges are the same)

    Advice to Management

Fix HR so that the employees who want to advance (and most of the value) don't have to leave to get what they want. This leaves just the complacent there for the long term.

Either decide that IT should be internal or outsourced. The time it takes to use the software and computers we have for science literally takes up 50% of people's time. The people in IT are just documenting things all the time and not delivering any value. Most of the increases in efficiency could come from moderate spend, but IT is unwilling to acknowledge sunk cost of legacy platforms. Our software is 15 years behind our science.

I have been working at Biogen full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great benefits; access to training and development. Very competitive pay. Wonderful people below senior execs who really care about patients and world class Dev Organization

    Cons

New CEO is killing off what was great. McKinsey is running the show and people fear more layoffs. The executive team is totally out of touch with what is really happening. It's very sad. No one dares dissent.

    Advice to Management

    Go back to Merck

I worked at Biogen full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Biogen has a very good reputation in the biotech industry and it has been very successful until it started going down the hill since 2015.

    Cons

Biogen has had many setbacks and did not make the right strategic decisions to stay at the top. For that reason, many employees were let go, the atmosphere started becoming toxic and many employees quit the company. One of biogen's motto is "caring deeply"; if Biogen truly cares deeply for the patients and for external stakeholders, it is untrue for its own employees.

    Advice to Management

Realize that a large proportion of the employees are not happy and are disengaged and are looking for other opportunities. Senior Management (together with HR which has an unusual strong power in this company) must take action and must take care of the employees.

    I worked at Biogen full-time

    Pros

    -Pay is way above
    -Benefits are great
    -A few good people

    Cons

    -clicky
-racist: seen many people of color leave to work elsewhere. they don't stay at biogen very long. Even during the hiring process felt like the hiring managers were questioning my academic credentials. Got the job anyway. Someone overheard a manager say that if I spoke more like a white person I would have been promoted.
    -laying people off without notice
-lots of changing over the last year

    Advice to Management

HR is racist. hiring process is racist. better training. recognize/reward people for good work.
