I worked at Black Hills Corporation (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Black Hills provides very good benefits and is competetive with salaries/wages.

    Cons

Corporate culture is no longer a team atmosphere but has evolved into a much more acidic enviroment. Senior management appears not to care, but does promote publicly a false impression of the actual culture.

    Advice to Management

Commnicate directly with employees and do not include supervisors with you as the employees will feel pressured to express what you want to hear not what you need to hear.

    Pros

Good Pay, Great Benefits, Good hard working culture. Great co-workers. 401k match up to 6%, Good bonus structure

    Cons

Company is all about their share holders and will literally kick employees to the curb to make sure they post profits. It does not matter to them how long the employees have worked for them, anyone is dispensable to them.

    Advice to Management

Do the right thing, don't use the backs of your employees to make you more money. Make morally correct decisions, don't take the easy way out.

    Pros

Great benefits and pay. Awesome co-workers. Entry level positions are fantastic.

    Cons

While the pay and benefits are good, employees don't seem to be appreciated. Company is not very loyal to their employees. Advancement within company is very limited. Lack of communication.

    Advice to Management

Strive to be proactive and appreciate and welcome new ideas, instead of being reactive to a bad situation.

I have been working at Black Hills Corporation as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

The company industry is in the energy services sector, so most employment positions are stable at this time, across 8 mid-western and western states. The recent merger with Source Gas has created more opportunities for project and consolidation work.

    Cons

The corporation overall is mired in stodgy legacy enterprise applications and initiatives. Some of the planned migrations, to antiquated legacy systems (like Cobol-based Asset Suite) are targeted for roll-out in a too-far-out two years (2017Q4). Management doesn't have a clear vision to improve the IT infrastructure. To an agile technology employee, this is frustrating. Also, a large majority of the (BHC) employees (not Source Gas?) are old-school (Rapid City) personnel, that could also use a mentality modernization.

    Advice to Management

Reduce future costs by investing in competent employees coupled with modern IT systems.

    Pros

An electric and gas utility is generally a very stable company. Black Hills excels in their main business, and the mine-to-mouth generation model is probably the most robust when facing recent emissions restrictions. Some groups are on the cutting-edge of adopting the latest technologies.

    Cons

Like most utilities, BHC suffers from a workforce that is rapidly approaching retirement. They will need workers to take over many roles, but training developed is not sufficient to adequately prepare those new hires to replace the decades of retiree's experience. While work/life balance is advertised as "great," in actuality it is as lacking as you would expect from a company where you bill time by the quarter-hour.

    Pros

Many opportunities...for those willing to pursue them.

    Cons

Hmmm...nothing significant other than continuing to mature structure as growth continues.

    Advice to Management

    Nothing to share here...

I have been working at Black Hills Corporation full-time

    Pros

Very friendly co-workers in general. Nice flexibility for things that have to happen during a work day.

    Cons

Poor pay, mediocre benefits, management makes extremely short sighted decisions based on short term profit. Company constantly spews anti-environmental propaganda to employees and attempts to get them to lobby politicians on their behalf. Meaningless "goals" set by management that have nothing to do with actual productivity or work but directly affect pay and bonuses.

    Advice to Management

You have the opportunity to be at the forefront of cleaning up the energy industry but you intentionally fight to continue polluting as much as you can get away with, try to do better.

Stop making short sighted decisions for the company to increase your profits and start making long term decisions that make the company more efficient and functional.

    Pros

A big utility with good benefits.

    Cons

A lot of entrenched employees have power over other newer employees and can be vengeful.

    Advice to Management

Individually the managers are great but overall the management culture can be improved.
