I worked at Black Hills Power as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

As an engineering student on an eight month co-op, I was treated as an equal to the engineering staff. It was a great way to get an idea of what working for a utility would be like after graduation. The tasks assigned were not ‘busy-work’, but real issues that needed engineering assistance to be remedy the problem.

    Cons

Projects may seem limited, but you are working with an 8-month window as a co-op student, so that is expected.

I have been working at Black Hills Power full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Compensation and benefits package is good.
The senior management team seems to be heading the Company in the right direction.

    Cons

Very little advancement opportunities in my particular group. Local (middle) management seems to not care.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the guys in the field a lot more; the chain of command exists for a reason, but try not to allow that to be a bar from open communication.

    Pros

Great benefits! Market competitive salaries and above average benefits (high 401K match, affordable insurance, etc.).

    Cons

Sweatshop mentality even though they stress work-life balance. Management does not practice what it preaches. Example: company stresses energy efficiency opportunities to customers but does not practice it internally (no recycling, no energy controls for lighting, computers, etc.).

    Advice to Management

Go visit the various company sites. Notice the lack of decent office chairs, single bathrooms with single stall shared by 50+ employees, etc. We don't need first class, just a comfortable, decent working environment that shows some class.
