I worked at Black & Veatch for more than a year

    Pros

You pick up a lot of skills that can be transitioned to other career positions.

    Cons

Start out as contract employee with terrible benefits, no vacation/holiday pay. Layoffs happen frequently and people are treated like tools to fill holes after those firings. Very political environment with regards to converting full time employees or promotions... also with regards to politics (Bloomington, MN office). Openly liberal comments were made frequently as well as disparaging political remarks about republicans, Donald Trump, conservatives, and people from the south in general. Not everyone contributed in this but enough did without consequence to give the place a highly political atmosphere.

I worked at Black & Veatch full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Good opportunities if you fit into the conservative culture -- Work life balance due to the 9/80 workhours program, working 9 hours a day with every other Friday off!

    Cons

Work is always dependent upon industry, and with oil and gas downturn, it may be awhile to bring in more project work. Technology internally lagging behind -- conservative, but that's why they're cash rich.

    Advice to Management

Investigate operational marketplace industry software vs growing in-house programs

    Pros

Great people and work life balance is important here. Lots of opportunities for advancement and career growth with many global office locations and technologies.

    Cons

There is a lot of pressure to take a field assignment if you want to keep advancing your career.

I worked at Black & Veatch full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Loads of sewer system engineering jobs that are repetitive, boring, unchallenging and low budget, difficult and demanding clients, over worked staff with no consistency or standardization in practices or processes

    Cons

Crappy pay, empty promises, average salaries, long list of inefficient ineffective methods, outdated old school thinking, untravelled and mediocre management with little to no incentive to change the status quo, ugly cubicle life in dead end job

    Advice to Management

Get some modern tools and techniques

I have been working at Black & Veatch full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Solid compensation, very calm environment, reasonable and cooperative management, great resources to learn and expand knowledge, and enjoyable company functions.

    Cons

I work in a smaller market, so, not the corporate headquarters, there's a ceiling on how far you can advance. If you perform well at your job and get promoted, there's a good chance you'll be expected to help in your old position, which can really exacerbate feelings of stagnation.

    Advice to Management

Make more of an attempt to help your workers grow.

I have been working at Black & Veatch for more than a year

    Pros

Work/Life Balance. Opportunities for advancement. Opportunities for department changes. forward thinking. Good 401k Plan. Great company stock.

    Cons

Management is usually a close knit group. Promotions can take a while. Work can be ebb & flow, very busy to not busy at all.

    Advice to Management

Focus on people's day to day more. Relate to employee experiences. Listen to what changes might and might not work.

I worked at Black & Veatch for less than a year

    Pros

Great Benefits. Huge Company with tons of opportunity if you're willing to travel the world!

    Cons

VERY Clique-y! Also, nepotism runs rampant at BV! It makes sense if a great worker brings in family and friends to a company - but they should NEVER work in the same department/division where there could be undo influence or the PERCEPTION of undo influence.

    Advice to Management

    None.
