I worked at Black & Veatch full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Annual merit aka "cost of living" raises, annual bonuses. Stock and 401k contribution, very good health benefits, flexible schedule

    Cons

Chaotic environment, little or no process or procedure, always short staffed, frequent changes in management, poor incompetent management, no consequences for employees who aren't performing well as long as they are allied with someone in management, similarly it doesn't matter how well you perform if you don't play politics and align with the right people. Chronic low morale. If/when you get laid off (as was my case) no severance package (even after 5 years) ouch!

    Pros

Great company to work for with good people. There is open communication between employees and upper management. You are never treated as a number.

    Cons

Cafeteria food is expensive and hours could be extended like the self checkout in the IP cafe. Vending machines need card readers.

    Advice to Management

Open a general suggestions area in the iNet for employees to communicate ideas and concerns at any time in an anonymous fashion.

    I worked at Black & Veatch full-time

    Pros

Great group of people to work with in the immediate office! Interesting, challenging work. Most people are really helpful & it's an enjoyable work environment.

    Cons

It's a "churn & burn" type of work environment to be honest. Contract to hire is misleading here because in reality only about 1 in 10, so 10% or less, contract people will actually be hired on as B&V employees. Getting hired on will take longer than anticipated too.

There is a serious lack of communication. Many people live & work in Kansas. They are critical to understanding the projects.

All time away from the office, including holidays etc, will have to either be made up through working additional hours on other days or missed altogether as there are no paid holidays or sick time.

On the days work is slow at the office, employees will be sent home if there isn't work readily available for them & won't be paid for that time. When employees are given an assignment, they are given a timeline in which to complete things. If someone goes over that timeline, the boss will be notified.

    Advice to Management

Give employees performance feedback. Improve communications & value people. Do not let someone from one office fire a person from another office; that is a huge liability. In the computer system, change it to "contract employee" or similar, instead of "non-employee", which is insulting & not grammatically correct.

    Pros

Good work life balance. Stable company, whilst there is fluctuation at project level the corporation is run by a conservative board who are very considered in their risk taking and subsequently provide a stable working environment.

    Cons

Risk Averse, Quite a stale working environment. Too afraid to move people on when they have gone past their best.

    Advice to Management

    Inject some youth.

    Pros

A major culture change is underway and executives are listening to the professionals. The engineering is solid and technologically advanced. One of the top companies to work for, in my opinion.

    Cons

Not too many. Perspective can sometimes be seen as old school, but they are definitely working to change it.

    Advice to Management

    Keep doing what you're doing!
