Good place to work, but beware the major cons

Nov 5, 2020 - Engineering Specialist III in Tampa, FL

      Pros

Low micromanagement Remote work opportunities Flexible schedule Decent pay Company culture (Aspire) principals

      Cons

Lack of communication Upper management thinks they can manage all aspects of a project without help from those who actually work in the trenches. They will make little to no effort to relocate your skillset to another department. They will let you go without even letting your managers know and without any heads up. Senior management has the tendency to "jump the gun" without any prior thinking or consultation. Company has tendencies for mass layoffs (I was here a total of 3 years and witnessed two major layoffs and one minor.) They don't quite understand how much talent rests with certain teams, and in turn, it will turn around to bite them. No severance packages or bonuses even for Engineering level III.

Change the vision every year with worsen results every year. -Good people left, and upper management ruled by poliction people who knows the B.S. - No vertical growth, unless you are in with a powerful group.

WARNING - RUN AWAY AS FAST AS POSSIBLE

Mar 12, 2020 - Engineer I in Kansas City, MO

      Pros

Flexible work schedule knowledgeable direct managers

      Cons

Upper Management considers you a number and nothing else I have literally see them layoff people on maternity leave... The benefits are terrible for insurance You have to work here for 3 years before your 401k is vested which they conveniently fail to mention upon hiring Vacation time is sub par for market standard (takes 5 years to get to 3 weeks) They literally made me train my replacement before laying me off with no backup position available, it was utterly humiliating For all of their ASPiRE values they push so rigorously, I found it embarrassing they still have the nerve to treat each individual with such a lack of respect. Their entire telecom division is a sham, they just ship everything out of office over to India, I do not know why any companies would ever work with them, let alone people wanting to work for such a toxic culture.

Toxic work culture with fake image in the outside world

      Pros

      Access to lots of resources

      Cons

The upper management doesn't care about you. They hire bunch of people to get their projects done and then you will be let go. They micromanage employees and treat them like school children.

      Pros

good pay, good tools/materials to perform work, co-workers friendly and usually helpful. some of the managers do all they can to encourage and guide you through your career or point you in the right direction to get the information you need.

      Cons

training is hurried, upper management expects an "at whatever cost" work load completion. too many micromanagers rather than letting the work evolve and complete with quality and safety in mind rather than quantity. culture is one of work before family or life, expected to work beyond 8 hours a day without getting paid overtime. stress is primarily from the unreasonable deadlines set and pressure to complete much more than time will allow. the classic... be in more than one place at the same time all while completing assigned tasks as well as taking care of those fires that inevitably pop up during the day. most of the time people are spread way too thin. makes for a poor work environment.

      Pros

      * Good brand name in the power industry and water treatment industry. * Compensation is just above average, and the cost of living in the area (OP, KS) is relatively low. The area is clean and pretty.

      Cons

      * Upper management has created two informal castes of engineers in the Oil & Gas department, the elites (white Kansans) and the mules (non-Kansans and non-whites). The elites are groomed for leadership roles, although most are unqualified or too young. The mules are relegated to support roles, despite strong skills developed elsewhere, and are the first to be laid off when times are tough, or if they ask for leadership roles. * Most projects are poorly led (by the elites), resulting in poor quality deliverables to clients, prompting repeat clients to pull projects and go find other firms to do the work, and promping new clients to avoid the company. * The performance review system is ineffective and is mainly good for allowing elites to cover their short-comings by dishonestly reviewing the support engineers (mules). The mules are easily blamed for the faults of the elites, resulting in more promotions for the elites and guaranteed lay-offs for the mules only. * The work culture is very cliqueish. The various cliques rarely mix, socially. * The purported corporate values are seldom followed by management or by the elite engineers. The actual implemented values are much different.

      Pros

BV has several good benefits and vacations. Administration staff are very nice and helpful.

      Cons

When I joined this company, I really take a full pride with my job, my company, and my responsibilities. However, often times there were no communication between the upper management and the employees about the performance or expectation in goal setting. Worst of all, we are told to work as much as we can and put about average 45-50 hours, or else you will be fired. Black & Veatch should change their mission value to "Charge our Clients as much as we can while contributing small values for the client." Many employees got laid off after they have finished first or second project. This is very sad. Later on, they hired many fresh graduates that have little or no experience whatsoever and charging their client as much as they can for "high-school" work like filling excel sheet, etc.

Good company to work for as a field professional.

Sep 12, 2012 - Field Engineer in Overland Park, KS

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Black & Veatch provides a decent salary along with decent perdiem rates for their field based professionals. While control and direction exists, I've never felt like there is someone looking over my shoulder or trying to micromanage a job I am working on. I've always been provided what I needed to finish a job when I asked for it. They do a very good job of making sure projects get finished on time and properly, an important thing for a project based company.

      Cons

The year end review system here is more of a waste of time than anything else. Other than a few top performers all people get basically the same year end score, regardless of effort, results, experience, etc. Upper management (and apparently the CIO as well) don't like new technology, or maybe they are just afraid of it. The company is always way behind the curve on upgrading to new hardware or software solutions. It's 2012 and they just started providing field personal with cheap smart phones.
