I have been working at BlackBerry full-time

    Pros

I came to BlackBerry at a graduate level, and was immediately given opportunities to work on a global scale with senior-level stakeholders. After several years here, I have had exposure to numerous projects as well as challenging and exciting day-to-day work. Compensation wise, I am rewarded very well and manage to maintain a good work-life balance with our flexible working policy (core hours 10am-4pm)

Overall, BlackBerry has been a fantastic company to experience at this stage in my career - and even better that I get to work a fantastic team!

    Cons

As with most large companies, BlackBerry is very process driven. I have had the chance to implement and improve some of these processes - however some others are hard to influence.

    Advice to Management

Take on board advice from employees to consolidate processes in order to achieve faster results. Other that that, it is a great company to be a part of

    I worked at BlackBerry full-time

    Pros

Having worked at BlackBerry for over 4 years, in Egham and then Slough it was a great company to work for:
    - Culture
    - People
    - Work hard but good work life balance
    - Bonus

    Cons

There was only a couple and these were around the very very confusing bonus system and the bureaucratic involvement we had to have with the North American GLS team.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees - we had a few "Skip level" meeting however nothing seem to come from them, not even feedback that we were listened to.

I worked at BlackBerry full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    - Some very smart people still at company
    - Interesting work around public/private cloud needs to be done
    - Pay is still competitive

    Cons

    - Layoffs still happen but no longer appear in media
    - Direction changes often
    - Terrible work/life balance due to heavy workloads

    Advice to Management

Too many layers of management that don't do the real day to day work/operations. They removed all the team lead positions so most managers are at least 10+ years removed from the last time they programmed even a hello world program.

I have been working at BlackBerry (More than a year)

    Pros

Seeing the latest phones and prototypes coming out before they hit the media.

    Cons

    HR sponsored culture of bullying:

Pregnant women are forced to use vacation time to attend doctor's appointments, night shift lead to complications and miscarriages.
Abusive managers who despite numerous complaints get slap on the wrist.

    Culture:

When managment introduces a new process to address any issue, you are also given a warning that failing to follow said new procedure will result in a disciplinary action against your job.
Stagnating environment: supporting outdated BBOS and BB10 platforms for which very little is being developed.
The market resists hiring current BlackBerry employees, you will find yourself stuck.

    The Schedule:

Rotating shifts takes a toll on your health. 1 week night, 1 week day. A lot of lost sleep.
Very uneven pay cheques due to the yo-yo schedules. Every third pay-cheque will be very short. Don't expect to receive the same amount of money every other week.
If you work on a shift when clock switches to Day Light Savings Time, you will be expected to work 13 hours but paid only 12.
You will be nickel and dimed, show up a minute late, get one minute less of pay. Doesnt work the other way around if you are held back for one reason or another.

    Advice to Management

    Management team is over staffed.

I worked at BlackBerry full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

When allowed to be customer focused it is a great place to work as can make a difference when dealing with partners at grass roots.

    Cons

Some senior managers are allowed to do their own thing and ignore processes (MAP) and relationship management to get a quick win/buck.

    Advice to Management

Check to see if senior managers are telling the truth.

Better benefit than average companies. Many talented and hard working employees. Opportunities to learn new tech skills and new IT systems.

    Cons

Rounds of layoff hurt morale (the quickest "solution" to everything); Too many levels of management; Software products not well received by market (product problem? Sale problem?)
