I have been working at BlackRock full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Firm has a very strong culture of philanthropy, diversity and inclusion, and takes a mature approach to work life balance.

    Cons

Given size of firm, it has become increasingly political. Sadly it has not invested sufficiently in training or hiring strong managers or leaders.

    Advice to Management

    Improve leadership and management.

I have been working at BlackRock (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Collegiate environment where you are allowed to learn from your mistakes. Some super intelligent people to work with and the technology is good and always improving. A great place to learn and start your career.

    Cons

Below market base pay. Hours getting longer and teams under resourced- general themes that show no sign of change. Constant pressure to do more with less.

    Advice to Management

Increase the pay at associate level

I have been working at BlackRock full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Varied and broad product set across multiple asset classes as well as technology solutions platform through Aladdin. Can have genuine open discussions with clients about any investment types. Good team culture individuals are genuinely willing to help you navigate the firm. I have moved teams internally three times and really enjoyed working with everyone in each of these teams.

    Cons

Can be difficult to navigate without a good personal network. High pressured environment, can be very competitive. Generally under pay relative to market.

    Advice to Management

Great culture especially in London office. Continue to foster positive environment with cross firm initiates and improvements in building facilities that facilitate collaboration.
Seriously need to consider pay and review relative to market.

I have been working at BlackRock full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

blackrock is a combination of 'start-up' mindset and huge corporate opportunities... start up mindset because: etfs is a brand new industry and expected financial technology enhancement is massive. huge corporate opportunities because: reputation in the street and many societies, events, speakers and training series

    Cons

the 'huge corporate' pros comes with cons as well... office politics and roles segmentation is not for everyone

    Advice to Management

need a more efficient reviews and promotions system. there is a lot of unclarity around compensation, expectations and ratings.

    Negative Outlook
    No opinion of CEO

I have been working at BlackRock full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Good place to learn
People are generally hard working and knowledgeable
    Very technology driven
Good brand name in the industry
Client focused for large clients who contribute significantly to AUM
    Generally very social

    Cons

Pay is not great compared to the rest of the industry, particularly for a company that prides itself on being the best and largest asset manager.
Sometimes has a blame culture so learn to cover your own back.
Tons of office politics so be prepared to play the game if you want to get ahead unless you're lucky to end up in a good team (there are a few).
Things are not always done with purpose. A culture of having meeting for the sake of having meetings.
Management prefers to have "yes men" rather than people who challenge status quo and think outside of the box.
Claims to be a meritocracy, but its not. At BlackRock, you will constantly hear about the importance of "raising your profile" and networking, which is important, but with some management it is more important than actually being good at your job.
Some shockingly bad leaders and people managers who do not actually know how to lead, but rather pass the buck on.
I would not recommend getting an operations or process driven job at BlackRock in London. More jobs are being moved overseas in a major cost cutting exercise.

    Advice to Management

Review remuneration. Dont just compare remuneration to average for the industry if you're the best and biggest, because you expect more from your employees than the average.
Do more work to improve the managers.
Networking is important, but it should not out-weigh being good at your job.

    Pros

Care about fiduciary responsibilities and role in the world. Very focused on growing the business even in areas outside of core strengths

    Cons

There is a lot of bureaucracy, enacting change is a very time consuming exercise and requires lots of consensus building

    Pros

A good work life balance and flexible working hours.

Good career mobility within the firm.

    Cons

Salary not competitive and lack of growth of salary once in the company.
