I worked at BlackRock as an intern

    Pros

Great culture and environment, compensation was great, summer internship program well thought out, but individual teams didn't have projects prepped

    Cons

Hierarchy and lack of on boarding by individual teams could improve uptake and productivity of intern or analyst. Other than that no complaints

    Advice to Management

    Keep an open mind

I have been working at BlackRock full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

If in the right role (corporate strategy) there is a large breadth of departments and information to continuously learn.

    Cons

Every other aspect of the workplace. Highly politicized (read kiss butt to get your bonus or advancement), management is incredibly denigrating, colleagues always trying to take credit for everything they touch.

You can drown in office politics and underneath incompetent managers.

I have been working at BlackRock (More than a year)

    Pros

Largest asset manager, attracts world class talent, growing businesses. Center of the buyside world and has relationships with all players and strong access to all markets. Great place to learn.

    Cons

Very bureaucratic, large, hierarchical. Underinvested in young talent, too many marketing, strategy, sales, and operations positions. Middle level managers in these positions only slow things down.

    Advice to Management

    (1) invest heavily in advisory and consulting businesses to diversify revenue exposure (2) Get rid of obsolete / underperforming VPs and Directors in sales, strategy, operations, COO. (3) Balance the cannibalization of active products by divesting in underperforming businesses and attract talent to growth areas with higher pay

    Pros

Great team, smart people, healthy collaborative work environment. Very good base technology

    Cons

Not much room for career growth. If you do something well, you tend to get stuck in that position. This is a widely held observation - not just my opinion.
