I worked at BlackRock full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great team, smart people, healthy collaborative work environment. Very good base technology

    Cons

Not much room for career growth. If you do something well, you tend to get stuck in that position. This is a widely held observation - not just my opinion.

I worked at BlackRock full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Most employees recieve higher pay for their positions than at other firms. The company also provides good resources for analysis and trading.

    Cons

In my opinion there is too much focus on making money and not on the fiduciary obligation. Company politics are really bad and worked long hours.

I worked at BlackRock full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

BlackRock has an incredible industry reputation, high bar of achievement and work ethic and fanatic approach to productivity. The environment is focussed on revenue, expenses and projected short-term growth. Relative to what is happening in the industry, downward margin pressure and potential consolidation, BlackRock has very competitive pay and benefits.

    Cons

The culture has become very top-down in terms of decision-making. The cost of getting promoted is to wait until your "taken out" politically or continue to fight another day. A company with great potential and very, very smart people but misses completely on a culture of teamwork and collaboration. Innovation is on a downward trajectory because of the culture. The compensation isn't standardized and very opaque - while it's more generous compared to industry standards, the lack of transparency and consistency creates a divisive and back-stabbing culture.

    Advice to Management

Focus on the culture. While every employee values the ability to grow in terms of compensation and promotion, you will achieve more faster by rewarding a culture of collaboration and innovation which includes failure than you will be a top-down deciton-making style focused on following the rules and short-term shareholder focused achievements. Practice what you preach in terms of longer term shareholder management.
