I worked at BlackRock (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great work environment, very colleagial, team work is valued. Decent pay and benefits. Ability to move around firm if you desire. Decent work life balance

    Cons

Managers can be inconsistent in success rate, ie get with wrong one you won't advance. Pretty political and bureaucratic which isn't surprising given size of firm.

I worked at BlackRock full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Most employees recieve higher pay for their positions than at other firms. The company also provides good resources for analysis and trading.

    Cons

In my opinion there is too much focus on making money and not on the fiduciary obligation. Company politics are really bad and worked long hours.

    Pros

Casual Bay Area culture. Super friendly. Seems like lots of upward mobility and ppl tend to stick around.

    Cons

No snacks but I know his isn't a tech company. Still would be nice.

    Advice to Management

    Keep it up!

    I worked at BlackRock full-time

    Pros

Great leadership, able to attract best & brightest, fun to work for company where expenses are never an issue, colleagues are motivated, driven, smart and generally collaborative. Company is transparent and town halls are frequent, informative and delivered by super talented leaders. Salary and bonus are very generous.

    Cons

Can be bureaucratic and political. Career opportunities are limited in non-NY locations. Company tolerates employees who behave badly and/or are terrible managers as long as they execute against objectives. Tech leadership is largely "home-grown" which means they lack perspective on how other world-class companies evolve technology and make technology decisions (e.g. build vs. buy decisions, breakdown silo mentality). Focus on talent mobility and stretch opportunities rings a little hollow. Size and scale make it hard to innovate.

    Advice to Management

Hire an external CTO to inject a fresh perspective on technology strategy. Don't be afraid to disrupt your own organization. Continue to out-execute and out-smart competition.

I have been working at BlackRock full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Operates at scale; full of bright minds and brilliant investors. Offers literally every type of investments to clients

    Cons

Hard to navigate for new joiners; like any large firms with bolt-on acquisitions, has many cultural clashes and people can be sucked into the politics of things.
Investment teams need to compete among each other for sales' time

    Advice to Management

Continue to value meritocracy, weed out middle managers, stop the politicking.
