I worked at BlackRock full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Blackrock does everything
    - Blackrock has lots of smart people and is very good at managing money.
    - Exposure to many facets of the industry

    Cons

    - Very large and bureaucratic
    - Lots of politics
    - Continuous re-orgs
    - One day you get a great review, the next day you've been reorged or laid off.

    Advice to Management

Stop empire building and focus on the core business. Pay attention to the non-New York offices.

I have been working at BlackRock full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Smart people, everything feels important and the company has a great strategy. And the ETF business is crushing it.

    Cons

the environment seems to create weak managers, the MD ranks are pretty poor managers, no connection to staff, and pretty out of touch. Not sure if it's because of the demands on them, or if BLK just hires/promotes people for the wrong reasons. I have found the deterioration of the work environment troubling - I once planned to spend my whole career with BlackRock and now i can't wait to get out of there.

    Advice to Management

Get out of your offices and talk to your teams!

I have been working at BlackRock full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Work with smart people who care about building client's financial futures. Work/life balance is above average for finance.

    Cons

There is the "BlackRock discount" that you accept for a strong culture and better work/life balance. I would imagine there are a ton of back office jobs that are not very interesting.

    Advice to Management

Not that the company is perfect, but I do not care to provide advice to management via this forum.

    Pros

Great firm to start your career. You work with brilliant and smart people. Well developed analyst program.

    Cons

Can be a cut throat environment. Very dependent on manager on whether you like or job or not. Political culture. Layoffs and reorgs happen all the time. "The only thing that is constant is change." is their motto.

    Advice to Management

    Train your new managers.

smart team, fun projects, good starting point, work-life balance is ok

    Cons

I have been working at BlackRock full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Opportunity to be developed if you take initiative and supportive of work life balance.

    Cons

More diversity is needed with gender and culture. (e.g. I am one of four women on my team internationally and the only one in America. I am also Native American and there aren't many other natives in the firm globally.)

    Advice to Management

Make the time to have consistent weekly check-ins with your staff, especially, if they are taking the initiative to come to you. (Personally, my manager is awesome with this but this is what I have witnessed in other business units over the last 10yrs).
