I have been working at Blackbaud full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The idea sold is that Blackbaud helps non-profits. Charleston and especially Austin are desirable locations for technology engineers to job hop.

    Cons

The reality is that non-profits are fed recurring revenue charges on an inferior product that was neglected for years. Leadership is pushing stock higher with investor relation roles and not strength of product or organic growth. Managers have little to no training and are force fed performance management exercises sold by consultants and software providers. Outdated two year vesting on small matched company 401k donations. Satellite offices and acquisitions are neglected after closing in another attempt to show growth.

    Advice to Management

    Invest more in product engineering

I have been working at Blackbaud full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    -4 weeks of PTO
    -On site gym and cafeteria
-Getting to support non-profit organizations and charities that are doing meaningful work.
    -Education reimbursement.

    Cons

-Lower than average pay for the industry.
-You may be hired for one job role (IT related) and then suddenly told you're getting demoted and will be taking customer service calls because of restructuring efforts (which at a glance of previous Glassdoor reviews, seems to happen every 6-12 months).
-No transparency or communication at all from management.
-Incredibly outdated and poorly coded software.
-Management is out of touch and seem to consistently make poor business decisions.
-Constant threat of layoffs. You'll be told that we need to do more to stay profitable and that margins are thin while simultaneously receiving communications from C-level management that we're breaking records with profit and stock value. There was an attempt to move many of the customer facing jobs to India/the Philippines, which failed miserably - but shows that they value profit over quality of service.
-Honest feedback, even when constructive, is not valued and will be ignored. Worst case scenario, you'll have a meeting with managers that accuse you of being a rabble-rouser and threaten your job (when in reality, an employee that voices their concerns is an employee that cares about their company).

    Advice to Management

-Understand that employees who have spent years in the tech industry have invested lots of money, time, and effort into getting certifications, degrees, and staying up to date with current technologies. Suddenly moving them into a non-technical job role is a slap in the face and similar to the ethically/legally dubious practice of Constructive Dismissal. Instead of trying to force these employees to quit, have the integrity to lay them off or find a more appropriate role for them in the company (we're adults and understand that business needs change). Demoting these employees and giving them menial tasks might be great for keeping you out of the Post and Courier, but is not the ethical thing to do.
-Your software is embarrassingly outdated and falling behind industry standards. Please dedicate more on-shore resources to your development teams instead of pretentious modern furniture (it doesn't matter if your HQ looks like Google when your software requires components that are no longer supported by Microsoft and are a security risk).

    Pros

Blackbaud has really devoted and quality customers.

    Cons

Zero respect for sales staff, and many in other departments and leadership view sales as entitled and unnecessary. There is a growing sentiment that BB can excel without a quality salesforce. Overall target earnings for sales are well below market standards and there is no concern about this.

    Advice to Management

the business will not continue to grow just because SKY is cool. Without a knowledgeable and motivated sales group, the company is on the clock.

    Pros

Many employees deeply care and are very committed to customers, alot were from nonprofit. The customers and market is amazing.

    Cons

I quoted in title what senior sales leadership still at BB and former CEO Chardon said on multiple occasions. Strategy was not focused. Ignored flagship product. Let engineering drive too much product strategy, putting us behind. Aquired to stay competitive and didn't do enough to streamline portfolio. Not enough women in senior leadership, women often delegated to administrative or Maintenance of line for products, Vision attributed to male counterparts.

    Advice to Management

Be comfortable with hard decisions in short term to benefit the long term. Fix the "Cons". Respect & understand your customers.

    Pros

Pay is fair and benefits are good. Stable company and opportunity for remote employment. This section requires 20 words, however I can not think of enough pros to fill this space.

    Cons

Blackbaud's structure is a mess. Multiple people in different parts of the business have the same job. Everyone is spinning their wheels and working on top of everyone else. Executives don't seem to understand or value the difference between hiring leaders to grow talent vs hiring managers that simply do whatever they are told. This has led to terrible leadership, lack of strategy and embarrassing power struggles within the organization.

    Advice to Management

Stop worrying about yourself and your success. You should be a leader. You were hired to bring value by developing your people. If you don't want to do that, go back to being and individual contributor.

I worked at Blackbaud (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good health insurance and benefits are pretty good.

    Cons

Management is terrible. It gets worse and worse. The enterprise business is the absolute worst management team which is a total shame. The leaders are untrustworthy and will go after everyone and anyone they can go after if they feel the least bit of pressure. They are afraid of not making enough money to make the board happy and so they penalize their people.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the managers who don't know how to work fairly and treat employees well. Stop all the antics and games and focus on customers and business.

I worked at Blackbaud full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The people at my level doing the work were great.

    Cons

The directors and executives don't do any work, but rather take lots of days "working at home" and do no real work other than getting on conference call to tell everyone what to do. They aren't appropriate for their positions either. Many of them have achieved their status by being bad at their jobs.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the so many executives and get people who work. Be nicer to the customers and act like you actually cherish their business. Don't talk nasty about the customers behind their backs so much and really try to help them with their pain. Get rid of Senior VP's that do nothing but travel to Europe and dictate stupid terms for the rest of the company to use which tries to cover up what you're really selling.

    Pros

They're huge, so as long as you keep your mouth shut, don't expect to be treated like a human being instead of just another number, and do EXACTLY as you're told, you'll probably do well, or at least skate by.

    Cons

Completely averse to actually applying any modern management techniques. They read the cliffs notes version of them and then try to make them fit their preexisting mold. Resulting in all the right words but none of the right actions.

    Advice to Management

Eliminate two thirds of your rank and file, stop trying to rule everything with an iron fist. Actually listen to the people BEFORE you make a ton of decisions that have a negative effect on them instead of making the decisions and then pretending to give them a voice afterward.

    Pros

Products are for a great purpose and clients change the world for good.

    Cons

Too much middle management. Internal advancement is cherry picked. No where near competitive salaries with other software companies. Good work not appreciated. Stuck in the past as not allowing teleworking

    Advice to Management

Software is a global business. You can't pay Charleston salaries and keep good people. The days of having to go to an office are over
