I worked at Blackboard full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Remote work is available and technology provided is usually top of the line.

    Cons

The fact that only one sentence is listed as a pro should raise a serious red flag. This job will take the passion from anyone who cares to do things in a way that demands effective management of projects. Not by the Engineers who work tirelessly with spotty requirements, but by Software Managers all the way up to the VP.

Continued moving targets, lack of follow-up, and lack of follow-through on ensuring remote resources are utilized correctly. Add to that a continued impression that there is strife among managers in Development and those in Cloud Services and you end up with a toxic culture.

From day one, there was no indication that what I was hired to do was even cared about by the company. Unrealistic and unguided expectations to put out fires left smoldering by former employees. Dismissive Lead Engineers who believe being loud equals being right continually have the ear of ineffective management who refuses to make a decision until it's down to the wire.

    Advice to Management

You have some excellent Engineers in your midst. You have some terribly ineffective leaders who persist a bullying mentality where their lack of ability to keep up with the pace or make critical decisions in a timely manner prevent you from jettisoning forward to new markets with new products.

If you're able to hold on to any "new" managers that have skills in the areas you need and have shown effectiveness, do what ever it takes to hold onto them.

Your turnover rate will improve when you fill positions with integrity rather than those who talk a good game in front of a crowd.

I worked at Blackboard full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good salaries for area, good vacation, good work environment for the most part

    Cons

    Poor training, poor communication, nepotism

    Advice to Management

Standardize your training, have a review board who keeps all managers in check, get rid of current director as he doesn't know what he is doing - is simply a "yes" man for the executives.

    I worked at Blackboard full-time

    Pros

    * Really smart and dedicated people to work with.
    * If you're passionate about education, this is a good place to be.
    * Flexible work environment . Reasonable hours, ability to work from home, many remote employees.
    * Lots of opportunity to grow laterally and move between different parts of the organization. Good for learning new skills.
    * Generally fun casual environment to work in.

    Cons

    * Past years saw lots of churn among executive team. That led to constantly changing direction. Current CEO is trying to put company on a better path.
    * Vertical advancement (promotion within a team) is harder than lateral job changes
    * Compelling strategy but not great at execution.
    * Blackboard acquires a lot of companies and doesn't do a great job integrating them. This can cause culture conflicts.
    * Market perception isn't great, mostly stemming from patent battles 10+ years ago.

    Advice to Management

Narrow the focus, nail down the strategy, stick to it, and put an emphasis on execution. Stop trying to be all things to all customers. Making the hard decisions to narrow the focus and do fewer things -- but do them really well -- may impact $$$ in the short term but will build a solid base for the future.
