    I worked at Blackboard full-time

    Pros

few companies have a mission that is truly about bettering the community. Blackboard is unique in that they really are focused on improving education for all. Just ask any of the more than 100 consultants that I worked with at Blackboard in Education Services about their background, why they joined blackboard and why they stay and it will be because they are really helping teachers, faculty and administrators to improve education.

    Cons

working in technology is hard, especially when you are the leader trying to shift cultures.

    Advice to Management

    none

I have been working at Blackboard full-time

    Pros

Blackboard really does care about its employees and makes their best effort to treat everyone as a person instead of a faceless expendable resource. They show genuine concern during times of need, and work to develop employees so that you are ready to promote.

They really try hard to be a market leader, though they are not always successful, and they enjoy a positive relationship with the majority of their customers.

    Cons

The misses on the product side have been more frequent lately than the hits, and the product redesign they promised 2 years ago is taking a long time to deliver. Blackboard also had 2 new CEOs in the last couple of years and several department re-alignments which has created a lot of fallout.

    Advice to Management

Focus the product team so that your schedule can move at a pace consistent with current tech standards. Keep up the good work on the employee care and development side.

I have been working at Blackboard full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - True entrepreneurial spirit
    - Great working atmosphere, good/fun loving people who works hard, everyone here puts in 110%
    - Great manager (at least, my manager, cannot speak for others)
    - Competitive benefits package
    - The peace of mind that you're working for a well known, well established/not going anywhere soon company.

    Cons

    - BBMobile functions like a startup, for some people this is a good thing. If you like the high passed, change focus and start working on the next 'hotness', this place is good.
    - Although BBMobile functions like a startup, there are times that you need to work beyond the 9-5 work day. A normal startup will make it up to you with bonuses, stock options, etc. Blackboard makes it up to you with stability.
    - Blackboard's HQ is in DC, it's a 3000+ person organization with offices across the world. Coming from a startup, you'll quickly realize that there's a fair amount of red tape bureaucracy.
    - BBMobile lacks profit sharing or any mentionable bonus program, however their salary range is competitive.

    Advice to Management

Blackboard Mobile suffers from the same ailments as any other Bay Area tech firm. There are some rock star managers and there are some who require retraining - however this is not the crux of the situation. The problem is isolating Blackboard's Washington DC corporate red tape Initech-like culture from destroying what you currently have.

    To BB Mobile MGMT:
I cannot say enough positive things about BB Mobile's management. Ideally, in my next position, I'd love to bring my manager with me and continue working with him again. My only complaint with BB Mobile MGMT is that the current string of people leaving abruptly paints a bleak picture for all others.

    To BB Corp MGMT:
Do one of two things, 1. Enable the San Francisco office to operate as their own entity without the restrictions of corporate policy/IT policy/etc or 2. Close down the SF office and absorb which into DC.

    Pros

    San Francisco downtown location.
Dorm room enviornment for fresh college grads with zero experience.
    Smart engineers.

    Cons

Selfish and conniving recruiter who only cared about making a commission.
No adult supervision and they refused to hire managers.
Only friends of founders were considered for promotions.
Insecure coworkers would do anything to throw you in front of a bus.

I have been working at Blackboard as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Fun place, lots of socials, good office location, easy access to management, a lot of smart individuals and surrounded by an intelligent and progressive culture

    Cons

expensive to eat nearby, pay can be a bit higher, interacting can be a bit compartmentalized by department, a lot of hoops to jump through because of large company size

    Advice to Management

    Streamline the chain of command

    Pros

I feel that my job at Blackboard is very secure. I know that I will have a place there as long as I do decently.

    Cons

People are satisfied with jobs that are not good enough. There is not enough attention to detail, standards need to be higher.

    Advice to Management

You should try to care about the product you're making more. Focus on making your core products really good instead of making tons of money.
