I have been working at Blackhawk Network full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Fast paced, exciting and growing technology company. If you love big challenges and collaborating with diverse groups of people across sales, marketing and technology, you'll enjoy the Blackhawk career opportunity. We work with every major retailer and financial services company on their gift card and customer engagement programs, so you never get bored. Lots of highly engaged employees eager to grow the company. Great east bay location where schools are great and housing is more affordable.

    Cons

Departments are silo'd and cross training could be better. Company communication is adequate but could be better. Opportunity to expand leadership in more functions with proven track records from other large technology companies. Company is on the right path

    Advice to Management

Keep investing in talent - stronger people, better training programs, higher expectations but clear goals for the outcomes employees are working on

    Pros

Great right-out-of-college experience builder. Get to work with upper management from companies all over North America. Builds your resume. Always new experiences and skills to learn from people who are ready and willing to help.

    Cons

Sometimes better communication between different department is needed.

    Advice to Management

    Hire more headcount.

I have been working at Blackhawk Network full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good work life balance, decent benefits, friendly environment

    Cons

Compensation could be better. Politics, but guess it's omnipresent

    Advice to Management

Seeing lot of good changes with new management. This is a good time to establish/reinvent Blackhawk culture. Please don't be stingy when providing facilities at work place or appreciating employees. Increase compensation packages and advertise the brand more to attract good technical talent.

I have been working at Blackhawk Network full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Some people are really nice, smart and good to work with.
Location if you live in the tri-valley
Stock seems to be doing ok
    Adequate benefits package

    Cons

Some people are NOT nice, NOT smart and NOT good to work with
17 acquisitions in the last 4 years with no plan or budget to integrate
Employees of 10 years "laid off" for strategic moves
    Not staffed properly for success
    Constant budget cuts
    Regular lay offs
No overall objectives set by executive management
Employee surveys (GLINT) that don't result in actions for management
Glassdoor reviews that have been requested to be posted and rewarded for doing it
Not enough reward or recognition for hard work
Hard to get promoted from within
People in leadership have no experience in the area they are managing

    Advice to Management

Get it together - get a plan for all of your acquisitions. Not just how you can get revenue from them, but how to properly integrate them to get economies of scale. Stop treating them like second class citizens. Perform an ROI to see if it has even been worth it. Stop the madness!

Stop with the fake Glassdoor reviews and start looking at the GLINT survey results. Create action plans to address the negative results in GLINT and rewards for the positive results.

Set some company objectives and make sure that all projects, acquisitions and spend align to one or more of the objectives.

Understand that budget cuts and layoffs make people worried... good people will not take their chances, they will just find a job at a company that seems more stable. Communicate, reward and reassure the people that are contributing the most. Provide training for your employees and say hi to the people that are making your company run when you see them in the elevator.

I have been working at Blackhawk Network (More than a year)

    Pros

East Bay employment, interesting business model; not many pros. Don't work here if you can avoid it. Even the water cooler does not deliver well..

    Cons

Uninclusive culture, lacks communication, process, lots of chaos, few have's mostly have-not's, facilities and technology resources substandard. Senior management unable to empower employees to make decisions.

    Advice to Management

Get a professional management team. E.g., HR and Benefits is deplorable. Marketing, Sales, Legal, Finance all must be turned over. Hire new at the top. Old culture must go.

    Pros

near bart station, has impressive once a year halloween event, has a few good employees who got conned into joining and are now desperate to get out as soon as they can

    Cons

Politics, Politics & more Politics that will drain you, incompetent leadership especially in Information Technology, Nepotism across the board, Felons are running the jail quite literally....

    Advice to Management

The CEO states that employees are the company's best assets on the posters...the reality is absolutely opposite from this. Honest, Ethical and Smart employees are looked upon as threats to incompetent mid level managers who work overtime to undermine them and make them fail.

    1. Please tear down those posters in the 4th floor conference rooms, Madam CEO!!

Corruption is rife and you have not taken any action, you have punished employees who showed the courage to highlight the corruption and have sent a message to shut up and collect your paycheck

    2. Shut down you internal fraud hotline....there is no one at the other end

This country's foundation was built on providing opportunities to all peoples, not just from a certain part of the region or country. Managers are openly discriminating and putting the company at risk by violating EEOC regulations against age, sex and protected categories.

    3. Revamp your HR department, there is on one listening and watching egregious violations rampant in the organization

    Pros

It's a great place to learn when you are new and like being thrown into the fire to learn quickly. Stock options are good when you have a senior based position.

    Cons

They are always trying to replace good engineers with contractors that are H1B Visa heavy which in the end leads to a lot of poor quality engineers and their solutions shows. Management Doesn't really care about quality, but only releasing new features even if that means more defects to the system

    Advice to Management

Keep good employees and engineers and empower them to make changes when needed. Focus less on always delivering just or the sake of delivering, but rather focus on release quality and continually growing the products as if they were an organic living being.

    Pros

    Location, location and location!
Leftover food that you can eat or it will be a wasted

    Cons

Low pay, low benefit, so sad to see this company wastes money on consultants. Wish this money could go into benefits so every employee can benefits from this. This place is a heaven for lazy and incompetent consultants. Many consultants here are working not even up to 5 hours a day max. They do not need to deliver anything they just need to kiss their boss.
They think they are brilliant - Since they can get away with this behavior, they become so arrogant and acting out, some start bullying their teammates. Someone can say they are “brilliant j”; unfortunately, these guys are not even smart or intelligent. As a matter of fact, they are considered to be low IQ. May be the fact that they are dumb so they need to act out to cover their butt.
Some are meant toward their coworkers, they find any opportunities to little their teammate so they can feel good about them.
Some are so toxic, they put their nose into everyone works, they listen to everyone conversations, they snoop around so they can report back to managers. Since managers here do not have the ability to know “fake facts” vs “real facts”, they have no spine and no integrity to be leaders
Some are so unprofessional, when they talk, they eyes are rolling up and down, their pursed lips. It disgusted me when I see these meant creators.

    Advice to Management

    To engineer leaders-Gandhi once quoted
"A sign of a good leader is not how many followers you have, but how many leaders you create"
Please remember this quote if you want to be a good leader!

    Pros

Some team members are good to work with and we try to help each other when needed. Flexible on coming and going through out the day.

    Cons

Long time employees get the shaft at this company. There is no promotion from within, and when you are promised a promotion, HR will find a way to block that promotion. A lot of long time employees are mass exiting this company. If you are looking for a career, look else where. You wont find it here.

    Advice to Management

Stop with all of these nonsense employee surveys if you guys aren't going to listen to the employees. And stop posting fake HR reviews about working at BHN, I hate getting emails saying they will give me flyers points if we write a good review on Glassdoor. Seriously?

    Pros

    It's a below average company

    Cons

Lots of the reviews are posted by merchandisers. Who are they? they are the ones that stack gift card on shelves in retail stores. Those reviews do not help.

    Advice to Management

Put down some effort to address employee's need, which is a well organized company that people can actually work.
