I worked at Blackhawk Network full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The benefits are awesome. Health insurance premiums have become very expensive and Blackhawk offers low monthly premiums for a PPO plan that covers the entire family. Considering you could be paying $1000 or more a month at smaller companies, this is a huge benefit to consider when reviewing your overall salary.

    Cons

Misclassifying employees as exempt when they are not exempt by California labor laws.
Unprofessional and unethical managerial behavior that is swept under the rug by other managers and HR.
Discriminatory treatment by managers after returning from medical leave.

    Advice to Management

Managers should be trained how to properly treatment employees and leave personal feelings out of the workplace.
Managers should have some knowledge of various aspects of all positions reporting to them so that they have realistic expectations for each position they oversee.

I have been working at Blackhawk Network full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The people are good, and they are willing to hire experience. Close to BART station and Ace has a bus that serves the area.

    Cons

HR dept is young. They use national salaries to determine pay scales. A lot of long time employees are leaving, and there has been very little hiring, so there is a fair bit of brain drain.

    Advice to Management

Stop waxing poetically about how well the business is doing and then in the next breath stating why there will be minimal raises again. Separation, IPO, headwinds.

I have been working at Blackhawk Network full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I've learned lots from this fast-paced technology company. Exec leadership seems to have realized CIO org was too lean and is finally approving more headcount in key areas like Networking and InfoSec where it's needed most. The business is growing, but this is a Con as well because we do it too fast. EE engagement has become a priority and HR is working hard on improving the culture. I am compensated fairly, although the baseline annual raise for consistently meeting performance goals is below 3%, which I consider to be low. I think this is a trend of Tri-Valley companies where salaries don't have to compete with SF or the South Bay.

    Cons

Very political, but this may get better with the re-orgs in the Technology org. Network Team is overwhelmed and so much of IT depends on their services. Acquisitions are moving too fast for Operations to keep up causing grief for Pleasanton folks as well as remote partners.

Have run out of space and the cube structure in a word sucks. The noise levels and lack of privacy contribute to the meat grinder atmosphere. If I had asked to take a tour of my work area as part of the interview process, I may have passed on the job offer. As many hours as I spend here, it's not okay that it's this uncomfortable.

    Advice to Management

SLOW DOWN! Read the value words that are printed on the walls and ask yourselves if you are being honest. Give people at least 3% raises if they are able to keep up in this environment and do a good job and give even more to the rock stars we have. Keep up the (recent) trend of hiring talented people, including in HR recruiting. As bad as we need bodies, we need more rock stars and fewer clock watchers. 401k match and ESPP are nice, but no stock options or bonuses below the Director level are major shortcomings for a tech company making this much money.

Bring back the BNU program. Get away from the 5th floor more often and visit with people.

Do something about the parking lot. Maybe time to reduce the number of spots reserved for Execs.
