    Pros

You get to work at some interesting job sites and introduced to the careers of geology, environmental consulting and ground water. You'll get to make some great contacts for the next step in your career.

    Cons

When I was there years ago the company was completely mismanaging employee resources. 16 hr days were fairly common. Working 6 days a week 16 hr days was also fairly common (this includes drive time). If you want or have a family, this position is not conducive to that. We'd often get assigned jobs even in incredibly bad weather. The management would wait until all your extremities were numb in pouring rain before pulling you off a job.

    Advice to Management

Hopefully by now you've gotten your employee resource scheduling under control. Focus on employee retention.

    Pros

You'll meet a lot of people in be industry and make good contacts. Plenty of overtime and double over time but this is also a con. Good job if you're super independent.

    Cons

You are rewarded with more work and more work.
My days often last between 10-13 hours, five days a week. If you finish early, they will likely give you more work to finish to pick up someone else's slack.

    Advice to Management

The per diem needs to be higher. Reward employees with incentives or at least give them positive feedback.

    Per-diem Compensation is not great.
Long Hours! Easily worked over 60/week many times.

    Advice to Management

Per-diem needs to be seriously looked at. Respect of the 4/10s less of the 5/12s.

    Pros

-The work you do is rewarding, knowing that what you do is part of a greater cause (environmental monitoring and remediation)
-You work independently and are in control of your days work.
    -You work outside
-Staff and Management are always willing to help new technicians get their start.

    Cons

-Hours can exceed the advertised 4/10 work schedule, which usually lasts only two months (but you are still compensated for your work)
-Work can be demanding and time-sensitive. Must be able to work very efficiently.
-Training program for new technicians needs to be overhauled.
-Weekend work is sometimes required on certain projects.
-Quality of work is not regarded as important than finishing work quickly.

    Advice to Management

-Field training for new technicians needs refining.
-Project goals for some jobs are left unclear by project managers to their technicians.
-Stick to the advertised 4/10 work schedule.

    Pros

Field techs are given lots of responsibilities and get lots of exposure and face time with many env. consulting clients. Some time will be spent prepping in the office in the morning/evening, but this is definitely an outdoor job. Long hours, lots of opportunities for OT (45-55 hours/week). Starting rate is $16/hr with performance reviews and opportunities for raises at 6 month intervals.

    Cons

The work can be overwhelming initially. The in office training is slightly helpful, but the real training exists in the field with the other techs. You determine how fast you learn and how soon you will be ready to work on your own! This is not necessarily a con, but something to be aware of. Long hours - a pro or con depending on your outlook. The alternative work schedule only lasts a couple months, or until you are independent and can make the company money by working on your own.

    Advice to Management

Reward employees with the promised 5th day off! Overworking the techs is a big reason for the high turnover.
