I have been working at Bliss Integrated Communication full-time for less than a year

    Pros

I cannot stress enough how much I truly love working with each of these kind, creative and intelligent individuals! The collaborative and supportive environment that is cultivated within this agency truly proves that the entire firm is wholeheartedly dedicated to the growth, development, and success of each and every individual. The work itself is both engaging and challenging, which coupled with... solution-oriented team members, make each and every day exciting and fun-- as no problem is ever too complicated to tackle together. If given the chance, every single person here will teach you something you didn't know before. Senior management truly cares for all staff members, and takes everyone's best-interests into consideration with any decision. If you are smart, kind and tenacious, I would highly recommend Bliss. ...because, really, what more could you ask for?

I have been working at Bliss Integrated Communication full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Very open, non-hierarchical agency, where good work is promoted and celebrated, regardless of title. Management is open to feedback and ideas on how to provide better service and/or programs for clients. Other professionals are smart, creative, curious, and always looking to help younger folks grow.

    Cons

Very few cons. It's an evolving, growing agency, but every level is able to provide input on how exactly the agency grows.

    Advice to Management

Continue to be open to feedback, open to ideas from the rest of the staff. Keep high standards in hiring and keep rewarding strong performers.

I worked at Bliss Integrated Communication full-time

    Pros

Bliss is a challenging--and rewarding--place to work. I honestly could not be happier that I had the opportunity to work here. You get to grapple with complex industries and issues, experiment with creative work (this is certainly not your typical PR firm), and work with some of the smartest people around. It's meritocratic, too. If you do great work, you will be recognized. Also, as a woman, this was a fantastic... place to start my career--it is woman-owned and run, and they provide powerful mentorship.

    Cons

As other reviewers have said, this is still an agency, meaning work ebbs and flows, and sometimes that means putting in a lot of hours, and work-life balance can suffer. In addition, this can be a very conflict-averse place, and it can be difficult to resolve differences--culturally, direct (constructive!) critique is not well-received. Promotion cycles can be a bit frustrating, as promotion decisions may be made... months before the employee finally sees that promotion realized. Finally, Bliss underpays relative to the broader industry.

    Advice to Management

Develop a better mechanism for resolving conflict, versus shying away from direct feedback. Embrace off-cycle promotions so that employees are recognized when they deserve it. Invest more in professional development at the lower levels. There has been a lot of focus on senior firm leadership, but junior to mid-level employees have been somewhat left behind. And think about the pay and bonus structure, and compare to... what your competitors are paying--especially if you want to keep high-performers.

    Pros

The people. Bliss truly has special people on its roster who both care about and work hard for one another. This attitude permeates throughout the entire firm. You’re not going to get promoted based on individual achievements. Teams get rewarded and individuals advance with the firm based on the work they produce for that team. There’s also a level of entrepreneurship encouraged by management. If you’re content... with the status quo and aren’t willing to push yourself, this is not the place for you. Each employee is challenged to take on new and exciting things. Those who take leaps make themselves, and thus the firm, better for the long haul.

    Cons

As with all PR/marketing agencies, most days aren’t 9am to 5pm. This isn’t a con so much as it is an industry realization, which means there’s much more “work” than there is “life” when it comes to “work-life balance.” That being said, the people at Bliss make working those sometimes-long hours not only bearable, but actually enjoyable.

    Advice to Management

The level of transparency that management has with its staff is truly unique—a differentiator amongst small, mid-size, and large agencies. Although difficult business/staff decisions routinely need to be made, management always has the employees’ best interests at hand. Clients can be tough and the work hours long, but that’s the case across the industry. The care factor shown by management is through the roof and... offsets the rigors and headaches of the daily grind. Always keep this at the forefront of Bliss’ fabric and value proposition. Internal morale will be high and the business will continue to flourish because of it.

I have been working at Bliss Integrated Communication full-time for more than a year

    Pros

I've been with Bliss for a year and half, and in that time the agency has affirmed all expectations I had when I accepted the job offer. This is a firm with strong culture and values, and exceptional people. Clients know Bliss for its thorough approach to strategy and high standard of work quality. It's also a firm that, being run by three working mothers, values the whole employee. The firm offers a work from home... policy, every employee has laptops, and other benefits that allow employees to work flexibly within reason for a service-oriented company. You want to work for your teammates here, and that's clear. Management is very thoughtful and strategic about expansion of the firm.

    Cons

Bliss is a 40 year old firm, but is very much growing. With that, there are legacy aspects of the firm that are experiencing change and challenge as the firm expands such as infrastructure for human resources and benefits. For a small firm, Bliss offers a healthy and fairly comprehensive benefits package, but costs are high. Certainly this is a much larger issue, but it's also a challenge for employees.

    Advice to Management

As benefits play a more important role in securing high-quality talent, improving benefits offerings and controlling costs will be critical. Top of the list should be a parental leave policy that more and more employees will take advantage of.

    Pros

Bliss' core values are not just something we write on our website. They're lived and measured every day. You will not find a smarter or more collaborative and supportive team in an agency setting. This is a firm that benefits from 40+ years of work and reputation but still maintains an entrepreneurial spirit. Bliss has always been a meritocracy. If you come in at any level--- AAE to SVP -- with energy and smarts,... you will be hard-pressed to find a better place to learn and grow. And, we're owned and operated by three brilliant working mothers. In addition to being visionary, transparent and empowering leaders, they set an incredible example of working hard and putting the client first, but also offering flexibility and taking time for what really matters.

    Cons

As is typical of any client-service industry, the pace is fast and demands are high. Our clients expect exceptional work and results with consistency, and that can make for some long weeks. But, commitment is recognized and rewarded in the firm. If you thrive on tackling complex content, problem-solving and helping others, your efforts will pay off in both account and career growth.

    Advice to Management

One of our differentiators to clients is staying ahead of "what's next." Keep encouraging ownership of that among all levels. Our differentiator to marketing professionals is our culture. Continue to protect it as we grow.

I have been working at Bliss Integrated Communication full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The management team is super engaged and really goes out of their way to support employee development and growth. Opportunities for advancement abound, particularly at the more junior levels. This is a firm that's been growing and is poised to continue growing, opening new avenues for growth and the opportunity to carve out your own areas of expertise and strength. Bliss specializes in B2B marketing, so this is a... place for people who are intrigued by complex ideas, want to root out solutions to complex problems and who understand how to be creative within occasionally strict boundaries - regulated financial firms don't often have a lot of flexibility!

    Cons

This is an odd 'con' but it's been an issue for turnover: this is not a company where people can take their time getting up to speed. Even at the entry level, if you aren't prepared to dive in head first, take initiative and volunteer to take on multiple projects, then this isn't the place for you. And as a smaller firm, there isn't a lot of wiggle room to wait for people to get up to speed or fit within the... personalities of an account - it's a pretty quick "sink or swim" situation.

    Advice to Management

Continue to stay highly engaged, hire smart, driven professionals and keep building the capabilities of this company.

    Pros

I learn, teach and laugh every day. My career ladder has many offshoots and no top rung. Smart, kind people.

    Cons

Same as any agency: Some travel, after-hours demands. But leadership respects personal boundaries and appreciates employees' efforts/personal needs.

    Advice to Management

Growing pains will involve admin staffing, same as any growing firm. Keep listening to ensure support team stays strong

I have been working at Bliss Integrated Communication full-time

    Pros

Bliss is an incredibly rewarding place to work. From senior leaders to entry-level staff, the firm is made up of smart and hard-working professionals who genuinely care about their work, clients and colleagues. The management team places a lot of emphasis on mentorship and teaching, and so there are a lot of opportunities to learn and grow. They're also very forward-looking. Bliss has evolved as the landscape... for marketing communications has evolved, which has created significant learning opportunities for the firm's staff and strengthened the partnerships Bliss has with its clients. Client tenure is also a huge testament to the type of relationships Bliss is able to build and the quality of work the firm delivers. Many clients have been with the firm for 10 plus years (which is rare in the agency world) and they truly view Bliss as a trusted extension of their own internal marketing function.

    Cons

Bliss has experienced strong growth in recent years, in large part due to the "pros" listed above. With growth comes some growing pains as the firm evaluates the types of internal support functions or tools that are required to help manage an expanding team of professionals (e.g., HR/recruiting or staffing). The management team is very committed to testing and learning and improving, so there is no doubt that these... are "pains" the firm will overcome. They're also very open to feedback from the staff regarding firm wants, needs and opportunities for improvement.

    Advice to Management

The management team has established a strong and clear vision for the company, and they've created a culture to attract and retain the types of professionals they'll need to help them achieve it. I encourage the management to continue to push the team to learn and grow, and clients to evolve their marketing strategies!
