I worked at Blockbuster full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The company allowed fairly flexible schedules as long as you performed well and word a certain number of peak shifts. Working in a smaller retailer in management means the job is as easy as you make it through recruiting and training good staff. Customers are friendly and easy to please, for the most part.

    Cons

The company is trending downward as a brick and mortar. Career trajectory ends at store management unless you have a business degree or 10+ years with the company. Due to district manager churn, even when your store is running smoothly something is always having to change because somebody new comes in and wants it their way.

    Advice to Management

Go back to 2004 and really think about that Netflix purchase offer.

I worked at Blockbuster part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The only good thing about working for Blockbuster was that you got free movies every week

    Cons

Blockbuster was not a good place to work. The upper management (outside the local store level) made bad decisions that caused the store to fail. They had crazy expectations and always made you upsell. If you were not able to upsell, you did not get hours. Sometimes people just wanted a movie.

    Advice to Management

    close the doors for good

I worked at Blockbuster part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

They paid me above minimum wage, surrounded by movies and games, customers appreciate your opinions, free rentals, discount on candy

    Cons

    Vacuuming, sweeping, cleaning windows, rushed

    Advice to Management

All of the Blockbuster stores I know closed, so I don't really have any advice.

I worked at Blockbuster full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

All Blockbusters are (were) the same, easy to transfer from store to store; employee discount on merchandise.

    Cons

Souless corporate environment, not inherently Blockbuster's fault they're just all like that; forced to destroy excess product rather than sell it

    Advice to Management

None really, except maybe quit with the destroying stuff if you still do that.

I worked at Blockbuster full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Got to talk about movies
    Repeat/old customers become second family
Pay/Benefits good for small retail operations

    Cons

Too many business models-new CEO or VP would change business model, stay 2-4 years, new one would arrive and change it, stay 2-4 years, new one would arrive, essentially go back to original business model with minor tweek.
Had the opportunity to squash Netflix in the beginning, had the opportunity to develop streaming, had the opportunity to be ahead of EVERYONE concerning bringing movies to the public BUT choose to stay with brick/mortar system.
Past-store every 2-3 miles from each other Now-need googlemaps to locate a store

    Advice to Management

    Too Late

I worked at Blockbuster full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

This job is structured responsibilities; you need to be organized and timely in accomplishing tasks.
There is always something to do if you are doing your job. It can be a fun place to work with good team members.
    Free rentals for employees.

    Cons

Stores were cutting back on hours that the store was open; which was not a good change for customers, Flipped store 3 times in less than a year -- this confuses and upsets customers. Employees that were already at this location had poor work ethic and attitudes. A lot of stores closed including this one.

    Advice to Management

Perhaps a survey of customers would help with setting programs, better customer service and greater customer loyalty to the brand.

    Pros

Always getting to see movies before they were released on dvd/blu ray, you get a discount on new and used merchandise, and you get to rent movies and games for free.

    Cons

I was part time because I was in college and I have difficulties with the manager over only being able to work on the weekends, which I made clear would be the case when I was hired. They were very hard to get a set weekly schedule.

    Advice to Management

If you follow customers around and try to sell them things the entire time they are in the store, they will get uncomfortable and leave, or they will get annoyed and not be interested in purchasing any promotions.

    Pros

Working with Blockbuster Entertainment allows you the chance to have access to great new movies and many classic movies as well.

    Cons

The management setup was very poorly organized and the competency levels of most staff were not that great. Always felt misunderstood.

    Advice to Management

Not like it matters a whole lot anymore. They will all be shutdown by the end of 2012 at the absolute latest.
