I worked at Blockbuster full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Fast paced fun job. Something new happening all the time. New product every week. Never a chance for anything to get old or routine.

    Cons

Was a shame that the company could not have seen the value in a smaller version of the stores that could have still served the millions of people that still wanted to just go and get a movie

    Advice to Management

More open to change in the way customers want their product.

I worked at Blockbuster (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Was able to talk about movie, tv, and video game interests with customers, which made conversations easy. It was a pretty easy job, mostly busy work and handling transactions. Employees were able to rent a certain number of items a week for free, including pre-releases.

    Cons

Pay wasn't great. The work itself wasn't hard, but the customers could get pretty nasty. They seemed to think we could track people down to make them return overdue items like some kind of movie bounty hunter. They complained constantly about the prices, as if it were our fault they kept rising. There were the cheap ones too, that tried to get their money back for things they shouldn't. The biggest problem I had was the constant goals that needed to be met. No one wanted the packages because Netflix and Redbox were becoming really popular, and they still expected us to sell to every customer.

    Advice to Management

Chill with the goals. There are some people that you can just tell do not want to spend a single minute longer in the store then they have to, and many of the customers weren't there frequently enough to warrant special offers.

    Pros

The atmosphere and staff were great! I got to learn a lot about retail in a friendly, nurturing environment and discuss topics that were very interesting to me and relevant to the position.

    Cons

The only issue with Blockbuster is that they were phased out by more innovative companies and their pay for this position was not great, though to be fair, that should be expected when applying for this role.

    Advice to Management

Would have tried to capitalize on your branding by going digital much earlier in the game. I would have decreased the size of the stores and tried to increase the customer support presence online.

    Pros

Allowance of free rentals for employees. Co-workers were a tight knit group, and typically accommodating. Customer attitudes vary by area, but if you can talk movies or games at all you'll be all right.

    Cons

Pressure to up-sell became overbearing once Dish bought the company. All transactions were geared towards selling candy and Dish subscriptions. Sales is sales, but it felt off in some way. A lot of cut hours and reduced wages after the buy-out, too.

    Advice to Management

Good luck with Dish or in whatever your next career was. Despite the end of it, I did meet a lot of great people during my time at Blockbuster, and I'm happy to have worked there.
