I have been working at Blood Systems full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Traveling is nice you get meet other staff from different center.

    Cons

if your donors iron is to low then it's counted against you as well if they can't locate a city or town on a map also if you want to take vacation and don't have the pto then your request is denied

    Advice to Management

If staff wants to take off and gives enough notice it should matter if we have the pto. Sometimes it's not about getting paid it's about family .

I have been working at Blood Systems full-time

    Pros

My manager is a great and understanding person. Working for a company that literally gives life is very fulfilling and rewarding.

    Cons

The new CIO is inexperienced in a large complex environment and a poor communicator. He has not had a division wide meeting to share his vision and unite the team. Instead he sends emails with buzz words and fosters an environment of fear and mistrust. He threatens to take away benefits and acts like a bully in meetings with people lucky enough to have actually met with him. He doesn't listen to his team and makes it clear that if you oppose him, you will be fired.

    Advice to Management

Either rein in the new CIO and teach him how to be a leader fast or more good people will be leaving in a hurry. Encourage open, positive communication without fear of reprisals.

I have been working at Blood Systems full-time

    Pros

    Large company, good pay rate

    Cons

Company tries to do more with less, so employees can struggle a bit to get work done. Health insurance is sub-par unless you're healthy & rarely visit the doctor.

    Advice to Management

Get out of your offices and TALK to your employees! Stop making decisions that affect them without even knowing their daily tasks/struggles.

I worked at Blood Systems full-time

    Pros

This is a non-visionary type company that has strict guidelines and must follow directions carefully.

    Cons

If you are a leader or visionary then this place is not for you.

    Advice to Management

Act more like a business and less of a dictator. Allow the branches to innovate.

I have been working at Blood Systems full-time

    Pros

Company has lots of knowledgeable employees, competitive salaries and benefits.

    Cons

There have been too many layoffs, year after year. Job security is zero at this point which is contributing with high turnover in some areas. This lack of job security is causing work disruption and some leaders are starting to micro-manage their employees.

    Advice to Management

Find other ways of cutting operational costs to increase profitability. Don't hire additional employees if you can't offer a reasonable long-term career.

I have been working at Blood Systems full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Have a great manager and get to learn new skills in my field. Love working with my team. Pay is very good with opportunity for bonus. Great work/life balance.

Good 401k with matching. Telecommuting is available.

    Cons

Health insurance is just OK. Aetna does not have the best customer service. It's in-network only with a fairly high deductible. The company funded HRA does help with that but still higher deductible than I've had at other companies. Doctors visits and prescriptions are all paid at full price out of pocket until the deductible is met.

No short-term disability insurance. There is an in-house illness/injury accrual benefit but it accrues slowly and has to be replenished over time if used.

PTO accrual is OK. Paid out at termination.

If you have a spouse with great benefits it will help.

    Advice to Management

There's room for improvement with benefits, but overall a great company to work for.

I worked at Blood Systems full-time

    Pros

Great Instructional Design team which worked well together...helpful and collaborative. Diverse projects but most work was revision processes ; must be highly organized and effective multi-tasker.

    Cons

Due to longevity on the job, many employees work there for more that 20+ years it makes buy in difficult because the culture is obstinate... old and stagnate. Projects would get shot down because it looked or seemed new and wishing to stay with the tried and true.
There is very little succession planning for growth ... either retirement or death and then hiring for mangement positions are usually from the outside.

I have been working at Blood Systems full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Family oriented company. Takes care of their own. People are long termers. They tend to stay a very long time.

    Cons

Because people stay a long time, they tend not to have any other experience with any other company. It can be difficult to get management to see any other ways of doing things.
