I worked at Blount International full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Excellent people work there; Hard working, dedicated, and friendly/helpful. I worked there nearly eight years. Fantastic experience, and enjoyed several promotions. Good pay. Standard to better-than-standard benefits. On-site gym. Great campus, easy location to get to in the Portland metro area.

    Cons

Every company has challenges and/or challenging areas. At BLOUNT, one would be upward mobility. Others I'm sure might come up with more, but for me, this was about the only negative for me.

    Advice to Management

Are you hiring the right people to manage various areas based on skill set and appropriate experience, or are you hiring/promoting managers and others because of personal connections?

I have been working at Blount International full-time

    Pros

I've worked here for more than 20 years, and it has been a great place to work. One of the reasons I've stayed so long is the number of smart, committed people who work here. I feel like I learn something new every day. The international aspect of the company, for its size, is fantastic. It's easy to connect with Blount employees around the world (Brazil, China, Canada, Belgium, Germany, etc.) The CEO and COO are visible and believe in what they are doing. They are accessible, and personally connect with people in every area of the company. The changes they are making are exciting, including improving Blount's use of SAP, an increased focus and commitment to management training, and building a continuous improvement culture through policy deployment. Some of the more negative reviews sound like individual experiences that are unfortunate but not the norm. There are many, many people here who are working very hard for all the right reasons. Perfect? No, but no company will be. There are a lot of people who have worked here for a very long time, and talented new people are joining the company and bringing new energy and ideas. I believe this is a great place to be for my career.

    Cons

No company is perfect and change is always difficult. No doubt there are certain departments where the growing pains have been more challenging and there has been turnover. The company needs to have more women leaders in key positions (something they are working on). 2015 was a very difficult year in terms of financial performance, which makes everything more challenging. The move from public to private will cause a lot of uncertainty until that is resolved.

    Advice to Management

Look for areas where the company message isn't consistent, and make the adjustment. Insist on realism and consistency at the top. Keep listening, keep communicating, recognize and reward the best and the brightest.

I worked at Blount International full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Opportunity for education and advancement, continuous improvement culture, and the amazing people.

    Cons

Very business oriented, not a small company by any means.

    Advice to Management

Work with your team members, don't expect that one management style will work well with all.

I worked at Blount International full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Educational aide, good matching 401K, and room for growth if your willing to put in effort and schooling. Very goog technical trades "apprenticeship" training. Blount is very team oriented, and pays better than most companies. The employees in manufacturing are well trained and care about what they do, they are some of the best people that a company could get!

    Cons

Their sales forcasting has never been very accurate wich results in manufacturing fluctuations, poor sales and foreign competition picking up sales. Blount is closing its Milwaukie facility and is displacing "laying off" 225 employees, which include a large number of long term employees. Roughly 20-25% of its manufacturing work force is affected.

    Advice to Management

You are losing all your core employees that made Blount what it has become. There is way to much upper administration. When times get tough you let go the people that actually do the work! Stop with all the P4 business and just go with profits, your employees would respect you a lot more! Stop buying unprofitable companies and stick with the core business, saw chain.

Comp/benefits. Great teammates that really care about the quality of work that they do as well as the products they manufacture and sell.

    Cons

    Work/life balance
Missing processes in many if the different areas including planning, logistics, accounting, project management, and Admin in general. Plenty of opportunity for improvement.

    Advice to Management

Keep recruiting and retaining top notch personnel

I have been working at Blount International full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good pay and school is paid. Work with some very talented people. Can move up quickly and there are some good mentors if you are willing to be open and learn. The company is doing a lot of improvement activities to change the culture. Keep it up.

    Cons

There are some not so talented, lazy people that never seen to get kicked out of here! I have seen individuals cost the company hundreds of thousands of dollars and stay comfortably in there office playing on Facebood.

    Advice to Management

Make sure the people actually doing the work are happy. Cut the fat! We got lots of people that do nothing around here for 20+ years

    Pros

Blount International has a good track record with employees instilling longevity and loyalty. There were many people who were 20+ years and retired and as many 20+ years and still working.

    Cons

Blount International keeps employees and tries to grow them in their knowledge of company key metrics. However some people learn how to just get buy and sort of float through the system without giving 100%

    Advice to Management

Blount is trying to buy certain competitors but they are in a commodities business. The bottom dollar will win most of the time. They need to innovate something spectacular and relative to their current customer base.
