I worked at Blount International full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I worked at Blount International full-time for over a year. The SLT talked about great plans for the future. Great opportunities for operational improvements are possible. There is great upside if only the "New Ownership" and management can develop an environment of trust.

    Cons

After they were taken back to a private company there developed an environment of fear and mistrust. Many employees developed a Silo/Bunker mentality. The vision that the SLT had spoken about has become just hollow promises. Many of the higher and mid-level managers jumped ship or retired as a result of the current plans approved by the Lehman Brothers style operation coming from the "New Private Ownership" I do not hold out much hope for their future until the current owners

    Advice to Management

I am sorry that have been put into a very bad position from the "New investment banker ownership" Try to remember that your people are your best assets. One of the Ps in your P4 program.

I have been working at Blount International full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good pay. Lots of overtime. Not much else to say really. Wish there was more to say in the pros section but there isn't.

    Cons

Poor management. Unclean. Unsafe. Safety issues aren't fixed until an injury occurs. Machines poorly maintained. Employees do not work hard. Massive office politics. More is expected of hard workers. Management incites employees to spread rumors and fight.

    Pros

    Reasonable, not great, benefits
    Lean manufacturing culture
With many locatons, there are many career opportunities

    Cons

Too much growth too fast - no stablization between aquisitions caused a weak structure that is now crumbling.
There is not an honest member in the Senior Leadership Team. Many issues are blamed on the front line supervisors, but they are unsupported in their roles. The problems are at the top.
People are not treated as the most important asset. This is all words, no actionable examples.
Promotions are not earned, they are given from 1 friend to another.

    Advice to Management

SLT - Resign. Instead of strengthening Blount you have perpetuated favoritism, used gimmicks such as the P4 pin and BLT2 that haven't shown a postive return in moral but wasted a lot of money, and run Blount as if you are still Lehman Brother employees.
Instead of saying you value peple, actually live it by redirecting the hundresds of thousands you spend on first class airline tickets for directors and above and the multiple bottles of fine wines you drink on business dinners and increase employees annual raises from an insulting 2 1/2%.

    Pros

Long term and dedicated employees. Passionate about the product they sell and supporting customers

    Cons

Leadership change after ownership change was disastrous. Leader determined by relationship with CEO rather than skills. Not what you know but who you know.

    Advice to Management

    Develop leaders not yes men.

    Pros

Benefits are the only thing that makes you stay.

    Cons

Supervisors treat people like dirt. You're either a good old boy or a dog. They actually laugh about what they do to people.

    Advice to Management

    Remember the "Stanford experiment?"

    Pros

Great benefits (health, 401k, savings plus).

    Cons

Unacceptable behavior from managers is just fine with this company (HR presence almost nonexistent). Those bad people use others to move up in the company and take all of the credit. Because of this tolerated behavior, most of the good people leave. They like to preach about how their people are most important in the company but it doesn't show. Also, annual pay increase for the people actually doing the work is 2% or less. Lots of greedy people who will use others to get what they want.

I worked at Blount International (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The environment is pretty good, and the most of the people are very caring and friendly. Compensation is OK. Most people who work there care very much about the company as well as the people they work with.

    Cons

Business model is not sustainable. The competitors who are in front of them are getting further ahead, and the competitors behind them are quickly catching up.
Senior Leadership is letting second level management ruin morale and a positive working environment.
It has been said by said management that "This is NOT a democracy" and they have well demonstrated that by ignoring the decisions of others despite having been given "authority" to make said decisions. There is only one way or the highway at this company right now, and that way is very scary.

    Advice to Management

    Pros

A global company with a lot of potential, a lot of great talent throughout the organization, one of the best Continuous Improvement programs I have witnessed in the industry, the CEO (Josh Collins) leads by example and takes the time to know every employee.

    Cons

While the rest of the company is positioned to succeed, Blount's supply chain is struggling. Horrible hiring practices has led to filling management positions based entirely on "feel" and not solid education / skills / experience. The morale in the supply chain is the lowest seen at any company I have worked for. Communication is nonexistent and favoritism is played on a daily basis. They have lost a lot of good talent this year due to the ignorance of poor leadership and poor project execution.

    Advice to Management

Effective Communication and Change Management will do wonders.
