I worked at Blount International full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Stable company, had many long term employees. Great and talented people work for Blount. Generally, the employees are treated well. Good benefits and education policies.

    Cons

Since becoming private, many of the good qualities of this company are going away. Long term employees no longer are valued and many of the talented employees are no longer employed.

I worked at Blount International full-time

    Pros

Steady work with a company that desires to do better. Good coworkers. Good growth opportunities both for a career and within the company. Okay tools.

    Cons

Pace of change was slow relative to other industries. Information and resources were silo-ed like many large organizations. ERP architecture struggled to deliver meaningful analysis. Pockets of conservative workplace culture did not match generally diverse environment.

    Advice to Management

Overall, Blount does okay. Get the ERP right as soon as possible. Dig one level deeper in the financial analysis and review controls. Respect for tenure is admirable, but risks complacency and a lack of urgency.

International company with multiple global manufacturing locations. Decent opportunities for changing roles. Decent cross location communication.

    Cons

Disjointed strategy that lacked consistency. The direction that trickled down was not well understood a couple of layers down. People were touted as key but many instances of acting in the opposite manner.

    Advice to Management

Focus on real change and fewer more focused objective.

    Pros

The people are very nice. When I started working there in 1998 it was very family friendly and the company would do a lot of family events to encourage focus on family and its commitment to providing for the entire family.
Education support. I have been able to earn a Bachelor degree in Business Administration because of help from this company.

    Cons

Newer management has shifted the focus from taking care of it's people to a focus on the bottom line often alienating the people who work in the trenches for them. There is something to be said for taking care of your most important asset, people.

    Advice to Management

Don't just talk about respecting people, go out into the trenches and spend time with them so you can honestly look for ways to improve the way they do their jobs. Allow your supervisory team to have a smaller span of control so they are better able to spend time in the game with their team to help them be more successful. As managers, come out to the floor and build some trust with your team members by being available to them.

    Advice to Management

Bring in outside talent. Learn to cut cords when things are the most efficient. Less talk and more walk.
