I worked at Blue Coat Systems (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Nice people. A comfortable environment.

    Cons

Information flows in one direction, top down. Management doesn't listen to its employees, so it can be a frustrating place to work if you like fixing things and doing things the right way.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the experts within your company. Stop dictating and start listening.

I have been working at Blue Coat Systems full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good company, benefits, and other perks.
    Good product line.

    Cons

If you are mid career and have skills, other places might be better.
The company has momentum but you will not be included into success.
You will not be granted stock unless you are in management.
If you have kids and need to live in good school district, it is next to impossible
with the pay. Management has their own goals in mind, not yours.

    Advice to Management

    Tune into employee voice.

I worked at Blue Coat Systems (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Company went out of its way to organize team building activities. Break rooms were decent. Offers a successful product that is in demand.

    Cons

No opportunities to move up the company. Thoma Bravo acquisition of the company caused for a lot of good people to leave. Refused to back fill position to pursue consolidation of the company. Nepitism was common. I witnessed spouses, siblings and cousins brought in by management.

    Advice to Management

    Be honest with your employees

I have been working at Blue Coat Systems full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Strong growth and a positive financial outlook for the company. Expecting to re-IPO on the 1-3 horizon. The "old veterans" are the company's real strong suit... excellent knowledge base, great to work with and professional.

    Cons

Over the past 3 quarters Blue Coat has developed a real attitude. The company culture is now one of arrogance and greed. Too many "all about me" personnel and not enough people working to achieve the common goal. Very divisive.

    Advice to Management

Unless you want to drive out those who have built the company, be more conscientious of your screening process while hiring. And, quit nickeling and diming loyal, high-performing employees while you throw absurd money at new hire friends and old cronies.

I have been working at Blue Coat Systems (More than a year)

    Pros

Nice balance between work and personal time. Trying to go IPO is positive but not sure how good it is for the employees.

    Cons

Not sure what is going on with the new Mangt. team. It is the McAfee takeover. Cutting your accounts and increasing your quota unless you are a named account manager.

    Advice to Management

If you are going to offer stocks then make them real and don't hide a non-compete clause in there.

I worked at Blue Coat Systems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, bonus program, work/life balance, people, and perks.
Lots of opportunities to learn, especially if you're interested in all the different things Blue Coat does (and there are many).
Lots of activities, free lunches, etc.

    Cons

Everyone is doing multiple jobs. Upper management are so focused on keeping costs down that they refuse to staff most departments at reasonable levels.
Everyone who writes code has to work in an extremely restrictive coding environment (remote in to a restricted VM even when onsite.
    Top-down, authoritarian culture.
Few career path options. Very little mobility.

    Advice to Management

Look beyond the IPO and hire more people so you don't burn everyone out.
    Encourage bottom-up innovation.
    Try to promote from within.

Management tells you what you want to hear but doesn't follow through

    Cons

Company does not promote within, does not keep company up to date with important news

    Advice to Management

Don't roll out programs and branding when the management and teams do not take ownership themselves
