I worked at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, Montana, New Mexico, Oklahoma & Texas | HCSC full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The level of leadership, management and customer service is excellent. The benefits are outstanding. They have a great training claims processing program.

When you need help you sign up for tech time, which then you receive one on one assistance to process the claims accurately.

The people are outgoing and very cpmpationate. Management has an open door policy, and are what makes working there so enjoyable.

    Cons

Sometimes you will have to work a lot of overtime and on Saturdays. High stress, fast paced processing. Quality control and accuracy can be very stressful.

    Advice to Management

Keep your open door policy it is very helpful.

I worked at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, Montana, New Mexico, Oklahoma & Texas | HCSC full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Raises seemed to come pretty often

    Cons

Quotas for quantity and quality of work were constant. Quality quotas were starting to be extreme and hard to meet. Hard to see the big picture of what you're doing with people's medical claims.. you either get it or you don't.

I worked at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, Montana, New Mexico, Oklahoma & Texas | HCSC full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, retirement, PTO and tuition reimbursement.

    Cons

Subpar training program for such a large company. Limited opportunities for advancement unless willing to relocate. Unrealistic production standards make it almost impossible to attain while maintaining quality standards.

    Advice to Management

Focus on employee development. Make PTO easier to schedule. Take management sensitivity training courses. There needs to be an HR staff presence in Abilene and any full service unit. Focus more on the quality of claims and calls instead of quantity. Realize that errors increase when you require employees to work as fast as possible as opposed to accurately as possible.

I worked at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, Montana, New Mexico, Oklahoma & Texas | HCSC full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The hours are great, overall the company is very employee-minded and cares about everyone who is employed there. Upper management is always very helpful and pleasant. The care about what their employees think and feel while at work.

    Cons

There is a department that's purpose serves as assistance when other representatives can't find an answer or need help. These are people that have worked there a while and know all of the in's and out's of the company and services, thus why they have their position. Most of the time, they act angry or like you are bothering them when you call them for assistance, which can be frustrating and deter you from even trying to get help.

    Advice to Management

I think their in-house calls between representatives and the department which is there to assist the representatives needs to be monitored just as much as outside calls with customers and providers and they need to treat their coworkers how we are expected to treat the customer.

    Pros

The people are one of the best reasons to be employed here. There company values diversity which helps create a positive environment. If you easily adapt to change this will be a great employer for you.

    Cons

The pay is considerably low. You may consider the benefits from the company as a plus though. There is also a lot of competition for advancement when a position becomes available.

    Advice to Management

More focus in raising compensation and lowering the overt competitive nature of the company.

I worked at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, Montana, New Mexico, Oklahoma & Texas | HCSC full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

BCBS is extremely employee-friendly with regard to benefits and training. They seem to be most successful at cultivating talent on the lower-management level.

    Cons

The management style of BCBS in Abilene, Texas, was a mix of micro-managing, destructive divisiveness, and selective privilege. While most of my supervisors and senior supervisors were great, upper management encouraged a very visible split between "us" and "them," using information or withholding information to make the separation clear. Often upper management was condescending, elite, and dishonest. Instead of utilizing the talent on the floor, they ignored their employees' ideas, concerns, and constructive criticism. The work environment fluctuated between demoralized apathy to sheer frustration, largely due to the breakdown in respect and communication on the level of mid- to upper-management.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employers, actually listen, and realize they have a better understanding of their jobs, including problems and ways to improve, than you do. Give them credit for intelligence and a desire to excel; stop assuming that only management is worth your time and attention.

    Pros

    Benefits package and pay scale

    Cons

Mangement and Corporate's heavy hand in even the minutia of your workday.

    Advice to Management

Allow outstanding performers, to perform. Increasing production is not achieved by calling meetings - you must let people produce.

    Pros

Great flexiblity with your work schedule, and good performance can lead to the oppurtunity to work from home. The benefits are excellent, medical, dental, vision, 401(k), pension, 18+ days of paid time off plus holidays, and tutiton assistance of up to $5400 a year. The company puts a lot of money into training so they give you as many resources as they can to help you suceed. I haven't heard of any non-salaried employees being laid off.

    Cons

I'm not going to lie, the work is boring and very tedious, but you are well compensated for it. Salary and management positions do not come open often in the Abilene location, so the competetion is high for a promotion in that area. If you put in the time and effort you can easily move into some higher paying hourly positions though. Also, there is a lot of promotion oppurtunity if you are willing to move to another location. There can be quite a bit of required overtime in peak months.
