    Pros

Excellent work/life balance, the majority of people are very easy to work with, and the salary (if viewed as an hourly rate) is great. Additionally, HCSC is a very strong Blues Plan that is dedicated to the Customer/Member owned model.

    Cons

The majority of leadership has been with the company for a very long time and are therefore extremely slow to make any changes (i.e., not an innovative company). Because this is a slow moving organization, and due to the lack of career opportunities within the organization this is not a great place to begin your career.

    Advice to Management

Trim the fat and challenge your employees

    Pros

Good pay, very laid back, low stress

    Cons

No competition, very little initiative on process improvement. Diversity, Ethics, and Compliance awareness shoved down your throat and drilled into your head. Lots of micro-management... old-school management structure.. senior < lead < supervisor < manager, etc... A lot of employees seem to do only what it takes to get by, and fail to learn new technologies and move ahead..

    Advice to Management

Stop it with the "Be Ethical" messages, the "Be Compliannt" messages.. if you feel that you need to TELL your employees to be ethical and comply with policies.. why were they hired in the first place? Encourage some outside of the box thinking, don't be afreaid to take some risks, the payoffs may be worth it.

    Pros

Competitive benefits packages, and many opportunities to apply for jobs in other parts of the company. There are opportunities for growth and development.

    Cons

Work Life Balance only applies to certain jobs/roles. Since IT cannot make any changes during normal business hours, many times you will have to work nights and weekends in addition to your normal day job (where you attend back to back meetings all day.)

    Advice to Management

We have too many layers of senior management. Looking at the org chart there are Vice Presidents, Directors and Managers that have only one or two people reporting to them. Additionally the ITG Service Delivery Methodology (SDM) process has impacted our ability to quickly react to business needs. SDM documentation takes up an average of 35% of the time on a project.

  4. "Great job security! But slow in keep up with latest technologies and procedures."

    Pros

Job security and benefits are some of the best reasons to work at HCSC. The company shows great interest in retaining its current employees

    Cons

Poor communication between upper management and employees. As for IT they are way behind the eight ball in keep up with standards and the latest technologies. Most companies stay 1-2 versions behind software and hardware releases, but HCSC waits until its either not supported any longer or just does not meet business needs any longer. They need to be much more proactive.

    Advice to Management

Praising employees twice a year (bonus and when blue pulse survey) is not enough, many employees feel unappreciated. Most companies stay 1-2 versions behind software and hardware releases, but HCSC waits until its either not supported any longer or just does not meet business needs any longer. They need to be much more proactive.

    Pros

Close to home, good health benefits, decent pay, nice building, nice view from the windows, some of the people are pretty nice, flexible work hours - do not have to work a set schedule and can work from home when needed, despite how bad the economy is, no one is being laid off,

    Cons

promotion oppurtunities are very limited, have not gotten to work on anything other than what I was originally given since I started, not a very social work environment - no one wants to get together after work, most of the people here are much older, cafeteria doesn't serve healthy food,

    Advice to Management

offer more perks for people working here

    Pros

I have a good manager and am not expected to work crazy long hours each week.

    Cons

Underpaid. Not being advanced quickly. They have been filling positions with outside people instead of promoting within.

    Advice to Management

Pay people what they should be paid for their job. I know someone who just left hcsc for a 35% pay increase somewhere else.

    Pros

Competitive Pay, Benefits, Work/Life Balance, Low stress, Nice, respectful people, Great location in downtown Chicago. Company is financially stable. Great pension plan.

    Cons

Unhealthy, older employees (most of them seem very unhappy). Most people come to work to get a paycheck and show very little passion for their jobs. The culture is slow and it's hard to get things done without jumping through political hoops.

    Advice to Management

Culture is hard to break, but something needs to be done to attract more younger, passionate, and hard working people. It seems like HCSC hires the bottom of the barrel sometimes.

    Pros

The pay and benefits are competitive. The people who work here truly care about the work they do and believe they are making a difference for the members.

    Cons

HCSC has good intentions to do well by it's customers and employees but it is struggling to maintain it's previous strong culture. Most of the Sr. Leadership team has changed over the past 2-3 years and they are still trying to figure out how to balance the new demands with Health Care Reform and increasing health care costs with taking care of its people. Unfortunately they are managing to do well on the back of their employees. Once the economy turns around HCSC can expect a mass exodus.

If you play the politics game well, you may like it here. If you like to take risks, you need to look elsewhere. The leadership team talks about risks but does not reward 'out of the box' thinkers/doers.

    Advice to Management

Take the time and make the effort to let your employees know what they mean to you. Too much time is spent on the low performers and not enough time is spend with the average and top performers.
