I worked at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts full-time

    Pros

Benefits are excellent, good culture, very supportive of diversity and of the community. CEO is excellent and very friendly, approachable, and effective. Overall leadership team is strong, new CFO seems very smart. Focus on innovation is good.

    Cons

Too many 'lifers' that have been here for too long.

    Advice to Management

You have employees that are no longer effective, including their managers who are equally ineffective. Cut the dead weight.

    Doesn't Recommend
    Neutral Outlook
    No opinion of CEO

I worked at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    An easily understood corporate culture.

    Cons

Impossible to work there and try to effect meaningful change without the support from top leaders. Even projects which have been well underway and funded to the tune of millions dollars have been killed (and leader laid off) because someone powerful has decided that the there's a new shiny object.

    Advice to Management

Stop playing games with people...give honesty a chance.

I have been working at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts

    Pros

Flexible work arrangements, Good people. Employees are concerned about the members and try to treat everyone , (e.g. providers, members, employees) honestly and fairly.

    Cons

Bureaucratic, consensus driven making it difficult to make decisions. Management has too many layers and there is seldom a clear owner of a decision or process so things can linger for ever or die on the vine because people are trying to make decisions that will please everyone.

    Advice to Management

Snr mgmt needs to make some hard decisions. You can't be everyone's friend if you want the cost of healthcare to come down. They need to venture out of the corner office and manage the nuts and bolts of the business today. Future vision is good but if you don't manage the present you can' shape the future.
