I have been working at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Fantastic leadership, growth opportunities, training, benefits, work / life balance

    Cons

Certain departments sometimes operate 'in a silo' meaning they don't consider the big picture and how their operations may impact or effect other departments.

    Advice to Management

Continue to promote from within when applicable and place an emphasis on character and general outlook (positive people) in addition to work experience.

I have been working at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The Pros of this Organization is that they have great benefits, its a very large organizations, and they do invest money into the development of their leadership. This organization does promote inclusiveness, and the leadership team promotes the corporate goals, and the mission of the organization.

    Cons

Although this company provides all types of training and offers various classes for their employees, it is very difficult to move in an organization of this size. Many of their employees remain in entry level position while they hire from the outside, while they continue to have their employees invest time into leadership development classes. Their hiring process is very lengthy and many of those conducting interviews have not had formal training on how to interview, how to prepare for interviews, and what are the appropriate questions for the positions that they are interviewing. I have witnessed qualified applicants not even offered an interview, for positions to be filled by a friend of the family, or a friend of a friend. BCBSM interviewing, application, and promotion process should be reviewed and revamped. When you have employees who have invested in their own development, as well as a company that has invested time and dollars in their employees, promotion from within should be the first option,in addition those that are internal, within the department should be given the opportunity to grown and learn at every level of the organization, which isn't the case at BCBSM.

    Advice to Management

Managment should review thier internal promotion, internal interviewing, and their canidate selection process. Leaders need to be held accoutable for decesions that are made, and they should be required to obtain training specific for leaders, how to manage, and how not to manage, what is a manager, understand what is a leader. Although your leaders may have a strong skill set in one are, does not mean they are effective leaders. An effective leader develops leaders, while maintaining the day to day operations of the business. An effective leader is not passive, the effective is the catalyst for change, to make the business better, and they help move people to places that they can be most effective.
