I have been working at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great group of team mates. A great benefit package. Many opportunities to volunteer in the community. The company is well known in the state and beyond.

    Cons

It’s very difficult to get in. I had to go through an agency on a temporary assignment to get my foot in the door.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the “worker bees” more often. We have many ideas on efficiency and increased productivity.

I worked at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - The benefits and pay are great
    - You do overall feel the social mission and that you are working at a non-profit much of the time
    - The company does a great job partnering with the physician community

    Cons

    - It's a very big organization and many of the departments are not well connected so you sometimes feel like you are working in your department, rather than a part of the larger company
    - Many folks there are "lifers" and don't really care about doing a great job or mentoring others there

    Pros

Good benefits package, free parking, downtown location, good volunteer opportunities available during work hours, some local discounts available to emploees

    Cons

Low compensation, poor communication, poor work / life balance, lack of leadership support and guidance, VERY top down in the decision making

    Advice to Management

Communicate clearly with team members, make sure expectations are known up front rather than at review time.

    Cons

I have been working at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan full-time

    Pros

Great place to grow professionally with over 15k instructional e-courses and e-books at your fingertips...monthly seminars too.

    Cons

    Healthcare industry external dynamics

    Advice to Management

Continue to engage employees and consumers to provide explemary products to the marketplace

I have been working at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Salary and bonuses are excellent. Great health care coverage, wellness and fitness rewards. PTO days recently increased. Some positions have work from home options/Fridays. Lots of nice people once you get to know them. Fun being in downtown Detroit.

    Cons

Priorities suddenly change with no explanation. Tons of directors and teams and you wonder what they actually do. Esoteric groups try to protect their jobs by withholding information. Probably the least collaborative place I've ever worked at, as well as the most confusing to navigate. Lots of older staff, many still fearful of/down on Detroit, have conservative tendencies.

    Advice to Management

Tear down walls/outdated practices at every opportunity. Give younger employees opportunities to shine. Make the workplace fun and less corporate. Don't expect everyone to stick around long-term for the pay.
