I have been working at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good pay for the job type. Good benefits. Good efforts to keep staff morale up.

    Cons

Poor coordination between departments, which is likely to become worse with increasing dependence on outsoursing.
High turnover due to understaffing and poor projections on future workloads.
Not family friendly scheduling. Monthly, weekly, and sometimes daily changes to employee schedules.
Employee training is often not reflective of actual work environment, which can lead to needless high learning curve for new employees.

    Advice to Management

Long term goals must be balanced by short term realities.

I worked at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota as a contractor

    Pros

    -some very nice people
    -beautiful building near nature

    Cons

-lots of "dead wood" - people have to hold 50 meetings before they decide anything. Managers manage one or two people!
-too big a gap between pay of their front-line people and everyone else. The people who take calls from the public are your most important people. Fire some of the fools giggling with each other in their cubes and give that money to your front-line people who work hard.
-CEO gets all whiny about how they're not making enough money under the ACA program (MnSure). He claims their deficit is $90M, but he makes over $3M himself. If he were a decent person instead Mr. Greedy, he'd take a little pay cut.
-always lots of jobs open, but they all require very specific and useless certifications. This fits with the lack of accountability culture in general - managers aren't willing to use their own judgment in deciding whether someone can get the job done, so they need an outside qualification to rely on.

    Advice to Management

Stop making people so afraid of their own shadows that they have to hold a meeting before blowing their noses.

    Pros

Good medical benefits and life insurance

    Cons

Impossible to get promoted, no matter how good you deliver. You got to be a " butt kisser" and constantly interrupt others to get promoted. Very low motivation and no rewards.

    Advice to Management

Show that you care a little. Don't run home before your time is off. Friday is still working day at BC.

I have been working at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good benefits and some very talented people. Nice to have a pension still. Nice walking path and work out room.

    Cons

Terrible culture now in the last year. Leadership is cut-throat and unprofessional. They seem to be trying to have a UHC culture which doesn't work well for Minnesotans. Very low morale.

    Advice to Management

Make a more deliberate plan vs. All of the reactivity and reorgs every other week. With all the changes in leadership and keeping inefficient and inexperienced dr.s around you are wasting a lot of time, money and resources. Try to capitalize on the strength of your employees and being more positive and supportive would save money as you would have more productive engaged employees.

I have been working at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good PTO policy. On-site gym. Free parking. Salaries are not too bad. Good work/life balance. Easy to find parking in large parking lot. Legacy systems are going away.

    Cons

IT group in shambles. No clear direction or strategy for any future work. Smart people being let go.

    Advice to Management

Re-think the overall reduction in staff. Make a better plan for how to leverage employees to better achieve corporate goals instead of contractors and outsourcing everything.

I worked at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota as a contractor

    Pros

Good pay, lots of activity for employees, onsite cafeteria, security is strong.

    Cons

People ALWAYS come to work sick, getting set up with passwords and login permissions take forever. You are basically just a number there.

    Advice to Management

The corporate culture starts from the top down. There is an air of superiority in the top management that leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Say Hi and acknowledge your employees when your addresses, they are the backbone for which you stand.

Very nice company with good values

    Cons

Employees that have worked for decades at BCBSMN with great knowledge that they are unwilling to share.
Departments work independently and make decisions without including everyone involved.

I worked at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Company provides good benefits. My co-workers were professional and good people. PTO plan provides for adequate time off.

    Cons

The pace of change in this organization creates chaos. One never knows when their job will be changed, again and again and again. There is little to no input desired by management regarding proposed changes. Don't get comfortable doing your job, you will likely be doing something else very soon.

Salary, even with yearly bonus is low for a registered nurse.

    Pros

The benefits are amazing, and so are they people who work there.

    Cons

The pay is below the industry standards and individual departments do not take into consideration how their changes in processes will affect other departments or the members they serve.
