I worked at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Excellent Values and Community focused

    Cons

    - The company had different areas and managers sometimes are promoted without the needed experience or education, therefore they could be very bad at being leaders.
    - Narrow minded people who think that if your skin color is not white then you are not smart.
    - A lot of back stabbing and fake-nice people.
    - A lot of promotions are given to people because they have a friendship with leadership, not because they know or are skilled.
    - They would work reliable people to death and let others who like to chit-chat a lot get away with wasting their time in gossiping.
    - No life/work balance at all. Your needs outside the company are not important to your leadership.

    Advice to Management

Get educated to be at least an OK manager. Learn to be fair and to see employees as humans, not just tools to get ahead.

I have been working at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Quality people
    Truly care about their customers
    Good compensation

    Cons

Due to legislative pressures and minimizing profit margins, the company continues to go through many changes which are negatively impacting the operations and member experience. Management continues to ask employees to do more with less - overworking everyone. Also, inconsistent flexibility and work from home policies are frustrating. Also, company prefers to hire from outside vs. promoting from within.

    Advice to Management

Learn to say "no" and provide employees the opportunities to be successful. Implement more consistent policies across departments and the organization.

I worked at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota full-time

    Pros

The real people with tenure that really care about the (members, providers, agents) company.

    Cons

Positions filled and/or promotions given because of "who" you know not "what" you know.

Also, employees in leadership roles should have a college degree not just a HS degree.

    Advice to Management

Need to clean house at the leadership (Directors, Managers, Supervisors and Leads) levels. To many layers in some areas that could be realigned to make the reporting structures lean and efficient.

    Pros

Nice base salary. Good bonuses. Great coworkers. Decent products. Centers are welcoming for members to visit and get answers to their healthcare questions

    Advice to Management

Decide what you want your retail centers to be focused on. The current version is confused and stressful. You're burning your employees out.

I worked at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Big company, big business. Work in the private and government sector. Helping people live better and more healthy lives. Friendly work environment. Has a solid budget in place for marketing.

    Cons

The environment is too friendly, Minnesota nice, a bit passive aggressive if you ask me. Business structure has the marketing department overseen by the Sales department. This creates a void in actionable and consistent direction. If nothing less, and great sales leaders do, they keep moving up, which means every 18 months there is a shift in the ideology behind the marketing department and its initiatives.

    Advice to Management

Build out the digital marketing department, staff and budget accordingly. Keep the community activations going, and look at adding an additional pro sports partnership. Live Fearless campaign has been falling flat lately, I would leave the ad consortium and look at a new creative agency.
