      Solid company- getting better

      Pros

As others have said, the benefits are great, plus a great work life balance. From my experience, people are generally professional and positive. There's a good culture within the departments I work with, but since it's such a large company, I can only really speak for my own area.

      Cons

Overall, there were a couple of poor structural decisions made in the recent history. We're still recovering from it, and there has been good effort among leadership to actually solve those issues, which is refreshing. Also, it kind of seems like the company is stretched too thin with a bunch of initiatives it wants to push through. On the one hand, you need to have lofty goals in order to reach them, but on the other hand, you need realistic expectations as well. At the moment, there seems to be a good balance between the two, but it is a fine line.

      Lack of accountability

      Pros

Bcbsmn is very accommodating for work life balance. Their benefits are good. There is a great opportunity to learn new processes.

      Cons

There is a lack of accountability among director level or higher. There are departments who are running inefficiently and are noncompliant. The directors of these departments are never held accountable. Instead, upper management will seek a solution by hiring outside vendors to fertilize the issue.

      Pros

A highly ethical organization in a complex, fast changing business environment. Culture is very respectful and accomodating. (Perhaps even too much so.) A fair amount of autonomy is offered for most employees to balance work and life issues. Benefit package appears to be on par with most of the metro in similiar sized organizations though pay scales seem on the low side. Excellent new management group will make the necessary changes to push this organization to greater levels of performace and efficiency. Internally and externally, this former "sleepy" organization is now very dynamic, lead by people with a broad vision for how Blue Cross of Mn is positioned in the local markeplace and indeed nationally.

      Cons

Pockets of stunning incompetence, coupled with a very poor internal technology platform. The people and technology problems tend to blur. Very unstable working environment at the moment however, this is an organization where great change is needed.

Overall, good employer but a bit behind on the times when it comes to technology.

      Pros

Very flexible schedules and accommodating of work/life balance. Great values and commitment to the community, as a whole. Volunteer PTO is a huge bonus and a great way to give back.

      Cons

The population is a bit older and the pace seems very slow. Technology systems are dated. It's difficult to push initiatives forward due to behind-the-times technology and competing projects to get systems up to par in the exchange environment.

      Great work life balance

      Pros

Fantastic work life balance. Onsite fitness centers (I frequently workout during the work day, which is encouraged). Good benefits-They even still have a pension plan!

      Cons

Very little company-wide commitment to promoting or developing their employees internally. Not much transparency in how promotions are awarded. People seem to stay forever, which means it's heavily weighted on older folks who are very resistant to change and innovation.

BlueCross MN is still a good place to work in spite of the outsourcing and downsizing.

      Pros

Great benefits and bonus. People are very nice to work with. Good work life balance in most areas. My immediate manager, director, and VP are great.

      Cons

There is outsourcing and downsizing occurring. The transition is uneven in some areas but this is not unexpected. Even though medical plan cost contribution is rising, still some of the best benefits around.

      Decent

      Pros

Decent balance depending on what you what your needs are. Depending on the area, you can get a good work life balance and decent pay.

      Cons

The same is true, You won't get the best pay, nor will you advance the fastest, if merit permits. It is typical of an organization that is large, with a lot of parts that move independently.
