    Pros

Career Advancement, Detailed training of all aspects of your position. Continuous training annually. Training for all new processes approved by the corporation.

    Cons

My only disadvantage was spent driving over to the office each day. Over 85 miles a day. Once our offices were consolidated. From Champaign to Danville.

    Advice to Management

    Great moral boosters when needed.

I worked at Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association full-time

    Pros

Coworkers are intelligent and passionate, exposure to a variety of healthcare topics, work hours are generally 9-5, strong company brand

    Cons

Unfortunately cons are outweighing the pros for many on this team. Turn over is high and this trend occurs every few years with the current leadership. Teams are over committed and stretched thin accelerating the exit of junior staff. Leadership has convinced itself that turn over is high because of the younger makeup of the teams. This may be the case for a few, but majority have left because of slow/unclear career progress, lack of true management skills by managers, rampant nepotism, and overall unprofessional behavior by team leaders. Behavior is mimicked by others creating an even more uncomfortable work environment. Raises and promotions are only given to those who threaten to leave with a competing offer further lower team morale.

    Advice to Management

Recognize, accept and address issues behind high turn over. Stop making excuses.

I worked at Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

People are good to work with - smart and very dedicated. Smaller environment but very large brand offers the best of both worlds. Opportunities to participate on cross-functional projects. Can get exposed to a variety of things if you put forth a bit of effort. Fairly low stress, significant amounts of overtime not required. Very solid company, in part, based on the structure. No fear of mergers, buy-outs, etc.

    Cons

Salary is a little below what other jobs may offer; long- tenured staff with specialized skills, who tend to stay makes career advancement challenging. No clear career path for many roles. Levels of approvals can be stagnating.

    Advice to Management

Reconsider job rotations or other programs to allow employees to grow and develop. Empower line managers and directors to make decisions and support them when they do. Offer better rewards for top performers.

I have been working at Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association full-time

    Pros

Work life balance is fine. People <40 are great to work with. Nice benefits and time off. Great lobbying efforts being done on The Hill.

    Cons

Leadership developing unrealistic GPO expansion with no strategy and no guidance whatsoever. Poor leadership, poor camaraderie among practice leaders. No opportunity for advancement.

    Advice to Management

Reorganization strongly recommended. GPO should be divided up with tech area organized under finance dept, and healthcare arm under office of clinical affairs...this would greatly improve strategic oversight and hone the visions of each area. Lack of growth and poor morale attributed directly to current organizational structure...Strategic Services not a proper fit.
