I worked at Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Career Advancement, Detailed training of all aspects of your position. Continuous training annually. Training for all new processes approved by the corporation.

    Cons

My only disadvantage was spent driving over to the office each day. Over 85 miles a day. Once our offices were consolidated. From Champaign to Danville.

    Advice to Management

    Great moral boosters when needed.

I worked at Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

People are good to work with - smart and very dedicated. Smaller environment but very large brand offers the best of both worlds. Opportunities to participate on cross-functional projects. Can get exposed to a variety of things if you put forth a bit of effort. Fairly low stress, significant amounts of overtime not required. Very solid company, in part, based on the structure. No fear of mergers, buy-outs, etc.

    Cons

Salary is a little below what other jobs may offer; long- tenured staff with specialized skills, who tend to stay makes career advancement challenging. No clear career path for many roles. Levels of approvals can be stagnating.

    Advice to Management

Reconsider job rotations or other programs to allow employees to grow and develop. Empower line managers and directors to make decisions and support them when they do. Offer better rewards for top performers.

I have been working at Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Some great, smart people to work with.
Overall, good intentions to be an industry leader.
    Pay/benefits decent.
    Politically connected.

    Cons

Does not screen management adequately - certain managers lack basic managerial skills and create a hostile work environment for team.
Company operates from a “too big to fail” mentality and has no real incentive to be innovative.
Develops tools that could be innovative and useful if the data was updated more than once every 3 years.
Systems are disjointed and archaic. Lack of accurate data is a major problem.
Poor communication between departments and from manager.
Very political - constantly have to watch your back.
No real training for job - figure it out as you go.
No clear performance objectives - Manager will dock you for not performing to standards that are pulled from thin air and not documented anywhere.

    Advice to Management

    Screen managers more thoroughly.
Value your employees - when an issue is brought up take it seriously enough to investigate.
Get with the times: invest in better technology and systems.

I worked at Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Okay salary for management positions and above. Some work from home flexibility. 9-5 culture - so little/no work after hours is expected.

    Cons

    - dated, old mentality
    - no/limited advancement opportunities (will take years/decades to move up)
    - very formal/stuffy atmosphere (leads to toxic culture)
    - lots of micromanagement

    Advice to Management

My advice to anyone working here is to only stay for a limited time and move on to better opportunities. Staying here too long, hoping for an advancement opportunity is like shooting yourself in the foot.

I worked at Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association full-time

    Pros

Being an association- you can see get a broad view of the insurance ecosystem across America
Zero deliverables or accountability - being a association has no goals or targets that create business impact - Easy work so a pro for some.
Location of the office both in downtown Chicago and one in DC
Many of the technologies, processes and frameworks are quite old and perhaps even outdated and may not need a learning curve.

    Cons

Zero Accountability- being an association, there is no urgency to produce or deliver anything. No goals setting , corporate goals are fleeting and very subjective
    Archaic Technology frameworks and platforms
    HR practices non existant
Zero manager training and or oversight leading to harassment and abusive culture
    Minorities beware
Ironically -one of the worst health insurance plans for similar sized companies

    Advice to Management

Formalize goals and annual review process. Start implementing 360 feedback. Invest in modern technology. And institute modern HR practices.
