    Pros

Decent benefits package, and updated call center.

    Cons

It kind of feels like you're only a number, not a person.

    Advice to Management

Act like the employees matter, not just the metrics.

I have been working at Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association full-time

    Pros

Although expensive the insurance is better than other insurers.
    Great vacation.

    Cons

Many of the senior employees are lifers and they are afraid of younger, more educated new hires. They want to maintain the status quo because that's the way it's always been. Many of these lifers try to sabotage and make you look bad so they can look like they are saving you. You have to watch your back. Lots of backstabbing.

    Advice to Management

You are losing great talent because there is a group of employees afraid of change and feel threatened fresh talent. You have to nurture new ideas or another company will.

I worked at Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The people I worked with were kind and friendly.

    Cons

My director had such a big ego. He wouldn't listen to anyone who reported to him. Even when it was pointed out to him that he needed to find something positive to say about his direct reports, he would only condemn and not praise us. Unnecessarily made for a high stress working environment.

    Advice to Management

All directors should not be allowed to live thousands of miles from the office and telecommute.

I have been working at Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association full-time

    Pros

Compensation average, benefits and time off, if you can take advantage of it, above average.

A wide range of solid, smart co-workers in the ranks. Great teamwork and willingness to work together to solve issues and complete projects exists, though this many times is killed by political turf battles between Officers and Executive Directors across different areas.

    Cons

Officers and HR not supportive of employees. Organization fails to hold poor performers accountable for their work or lack-thereof, leaving senior management reliant on the efforts on a subset of managers and staff, creating unrealistic workload and response time expectations.

Organization has issues communicating honestly, timely and effectively, many areas are toxic, limiting quality transfer options.

    Nepotism rampant.

    Advice to Management

Act and communicate timely, honestly and with integrity.

Put faith in your high achievers, look to promote from within, and give credit for a job well done.
