I have been working at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The leadership is top-notch, they are open and honest with each other even when it is hard to hear. They have done a good job of rallying together to get the organization through difficult times. They are open about not having all the answers and empower decision making at the right levels.

    Cons

If you aren't someone comfortable with not knowing exactly what's next, you may churn here. The level of transparency is great, unless you are someone who needs the next 5 steps laid out.

    Advice to Management

Provide clarity on what you know and don't know. Hearing more from management on the path to clarity is just as important as getting there. It's ok to not have it all laid out, but being clear on that would be helpful.

I have been working at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Lot's of talented employees, culturally diverse, good health insurance, very collaborative work environment, office is a ghost town after 5pm. My personal favorite perk is the fully-equipped gym available to any full time employee.

    Cons

Health insurance software is as exciting as it sounds. Projects have tight deadlines.

    Advice to Management

    Keep hiring talented people.

I have been working at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

BCBSNE takes good care of their employees. There are many perks including great benefits, access to our own fitness center, great vacation, and regular staff appreciation activities. There's also a great opportunity to get involved throughout the organization. The senior leadership has integrity and makes decisions based on our member's best interests.

    Cons

BCBSNE is a large organization so it takes a bit more time to get things pushed through. Healthcare in general is a fluctuating industry so change is always constant (good or bad depending on how you like change).

I worked at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Co-workers are like family and can be trusted. Employee longevity was once an asset; however, it is now a ticket out the door.

    Cons

Morale is low, stress is extreme, corporate trust is thin, the environment is hostile, workers are not provided tools to success in their tasks.

    Advice to Management

Your employees deserve the opportunity to rebut accusations. Your current environment is hostile. Knowledgeable, trustworthy and valued employees are being walked out the door daily.

I worked at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The benefits were good. Good vacation, insurance, 401k and a Defined Contribution plan.

    Cons

Unethical management and people are only put into positions because they are a protected class or because they suck up to management or are related to someone in management at the company. They often get rid of tenured people. Upper management are compensated quite heavily for being a non profit organization while all of the individuals keeping the organization running are paid pennies on the dollar. Don't expect to be promoted if you don't kiss up or aren't a favorite.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of some of the toxic management and this might actually be a great place to work.

I have been working at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The company overall and management truly care about their employees and understand that they have a life outside of the company. There are tons of opportunity for growth and management encourages this. The pay is good, the benefits are great, location is nice and centrally located, free parking, free fitness center, onsite cafeteria, the list goes on and on for why this is a great place to work! I have been with the company almost a decade and I have no plans of leaving anytime soon.

    Cons

hard to find a con for this company

I have been working at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Visible senior management, awesome benefits, emphasis on work/life balance, fun employee activities/events, not-for-profit business model encourages decision making for the right reasons rather than bottom line, large footprint in the community, and cares for members, employees, and business partners.

    Cons

Too many managers and levels within the organization.

    Advice to Management

Continue to push innovation in the ever-changing health care industry and encourage two-way communication with employees. Focus more on progressive talent acquisition and engaging millennial talent through your employee resource group and career development programs. Hold tenured management accountable to complete continuing education in management best practices.
