I have been working at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The benefit are amazing. Nice amount of PTO, onsite gym you can use for free, flexible work schedules, ability to work from home when needed, lots of employee benefit programming, etc.

    Cons

Insurance can be pretty boring, and it's also a large company (4,500+) so sometimes it can feel a little overwhelming.

I worked at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good talent exists within the company ranks, loyal and a great number of people have been there for a long time. This creates ad builds knowledge with company policies, healthcare policies and products as well as company's legacy technologies.

    Cons

People who have been around a long time start to age in their thinking, attitude and approach. They are exactly like the legacy systems the company mostly runs on, it does the job, but its buggy, corky, temperamental and resists change. More than any company I have ever seen, there are great divides between people where too much politiking is lurking around every interaction. This gets in the way sometime of getting any real work done, compromise is rare. Its a legacy company that is in dire need to fresh approach and a real jolt to its core to change. Status-quo is steeped in company culture.

    Advice to Management

Move out and create room for fresh perspective to propagate into company ranks and culture.

The company cares about your work/life balance and encourages a healthy lifestyle. There are many opportunities for growth through company workshops, intern lunches, and feedback process.

I worked at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Work from home option, onsite gym, onsite health clinic, and drop off backup daycare.

    Cons

Commercial Case Management department is this pits, over worked and under paid compared to the market. Management have no idea of what they are doing, no clear direction, and you have to work til 7pm mandatory several times a week. No autonomy, micromanaged, the metrics are unrealistic, the avg case load is 80-100 at all times. There is no real room for growth or advancement. It was a fabulous company when I first started, but I wouldn't dare recommend anyone to work in this department! The turnover rate is very high and no work life balance! That department is the pits! If you speak up and out about the changes and they don't like what you say then you will get talked to about your behavior like you are in grade school! So you have to listen, shut up, and do. It does no good to talk to HR because management gets away with everything. They say they want tour feedback, but they really don't. They make you do other job functions that are not in your job description without even asking if it something you want to do. Depressing and stressful place to work! Run

    Pros

Project Managers are a valued part of the organization. BCBSNC uses structured PM methodology. I experienced a good deal of autonomy as well as leadership when needed.

    Cons

Project timelines can be tight and overreaching. Project business owners can be less engaged than they should be making project managers work harder.

    Pros

You can a learn a lot from this company in regards to customer service and administrative work. You are definitely held accountability and you must take ownership to every take at hand. You can move up fast if you stay dedicated to your job and committed to the integrity of the company.

    Cons

With some positions, if a groups company image was not that good in the past, other managers would be slow to accept an employee from that group in the future.

    Advice to Management

Continue to keep employees engaged in the directions that the company is heading. Encourage employees to take advantage of all learning opportunities.
