    Cons

Constant nagging, unrealistic expectations and your level of success depends on managements mood towards you as an employee.

    Advice to Management

Take interest in your staff and their goals and aspirations.

    Pros

beautiful building, nice cafeteria, parking garage, great location

    Cons

I have been working at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

They talk a good game when it comes to diversity issues. More opportunities for minorities and women than at many other companies. Many colleagues are deeply conservative/religious (it is Texas after all). LGBT people have supportive official policies, but most choose to keep a very low profile to get along with coworkers.

    Cons

Very hierarchical. Relationship to Managers is by far the most important criteria for raises/promotions. If you are not favored by a higher manager you do not move ahead.
Many departments are increasingly outsourcing functions overseas. Meaning poor job security.
    Starting salaries can be low.

    Advice to Management

Culture strongly discourages disagreeing with people who are higher up in the pecking order. It leads to bad decisions, as nobody will stick their neck out to object, even when the higher manager suggests policies/programs that are way off base.

I have been working at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

As a none investor owned company, there are no share holders demanding improvement which reduces stress. However it also doesn't encourage progress.

    Cons

Management is unskilled. Many lack any knowledge of technology which is years behind. Middle management tends to tell senior management that everything is fine while problems continue to fester.

    Advice to Management

Senior management should look beyond what they are hearing from middle management. Also, clean out antiquated systems, retaining multiple systems is holding the company back

    Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas full-time

    Pros

Great benefits although it's tough to get approval for time off.

    Cons

Too many chiefs, not enough Indians. Micro managers everywhere. They take advantage of salary staff and work them to the bone. Favoritism towards male and African American employees. Hold grudges.

    Advice to Management

    Allow work from home opportunities.

I have been working at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Currently have both a pension and 401k match. Good vacation day count.

    Cons

Poorly managed, very low skilled people are promoted. Also, little training for employees. A number of employees spend far more time than necessary to accomplish basic tasks with software due to a lack of knowledge and possibly ability.

    Advice to Management

Realize that insurance is in the financial industry and focus on costs. Senior management seems deluded into thinking that they are in the health care business. Managing costs will help retain membership. Poor management has caused huge losses with the Exchanges.
