I worked at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Salary was good, no micro management on my end. Credit union was a plus. Bonus helped a lot. Work from home was super.

    Cons

Company ethics was terrible, the staff was unprofessional. No drive whatsoever. No team environment, staff was bitter and unprofessional. To much gossip amongst them.

    Advice to Management

Need to have positive attitudes and manage with authority.

I have been working at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Work from home opportunities, plenty of paid time off,

    Cons

HCSC has started having provider service do multiple states, it opens us up for more errors. It has turned into one stop shopping. The Wal-Mart of insurance you can get claim, benefits etc all in one place but because employees are working so many areas of business they are not proficient in any area. We used to have dedicated areas of business where reps specialized and were experts in those areas. Now we have more misquotes, quality is lacking. No bonus projected for 2017.

    Advice to Management

Let people do what they do best so the providers get quality information and employees are not set up to fail

I have been working at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Prior to 3 years ago, BCBSTX was a very employee friendly company. There was restructuring and change in leadership that has changed the environment for the worse.

    Cons

Over the past two years constant changes to duties, management and culture has created a negative employee experience. Recently there is a voluntary retirement offering that has created frustration and division in the ranks. Not sure about future for employees left behind.

    Advice to Management

Retirement should have been offered across all positions to avoid frustration of those that wanted to retire but we're not included.

    Pros

The majority of co-workers, in and out of IT, are professional and willing to help/mentor others.
Allows Work from Home, but conditions vary for each department.

    Cons

Many jobs being sent offshore. Policies applied on selective basis. IT management provides unrealistic project estimates to business which are difficult to get changed. End result is under-estimated project work piled onto an already overloaded project schedule and dedicated employees attempting to meet demand while maintaining quality. At some point, people begin to not care, not speak up, and do minimal to get by without too many issues.

    Advice to Management

No advice. My experience is that management rarely listens to advice unless it agrees with the goals for that year.

I worked at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

They provide plenty of training, they do activities to create a more team environment, they promote a healthy lifestyle and offer lots of tips and ideas to become more healthy, even ideas for when you are on the clock.

    Cons

Even though the company plans team building activities the management makes it so difficult to join that it is just not worth it, the management is very overbearing, it makes the work environment extremely uncomfortable. This job position has been sent overseas since I left, but there are still other positions there that have to deal with it.

    Advice to Management

Give your employees some space, you should be able to trust your help enough to do their job and not watch every step they make. If they give you a reason to not trust that is one thing but until then, relax.

I worked at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Environment supportive of the individual contributors at the company and truly focused on serving member needs. Good availability of continuing professional education.
    Challenging, interesting work.

    Cons

Very difficult to advance far. Not very many slots available. In IT departments, there are no truly autonomous teams; the process gets projects bogged down because there's just not enough communication between the project sponsors and the people who must actually delivery the solution.

    Advice to Management

The project manager is not in charge of the solution development team. Talk to the team, not the PM. And listen to what they have to say -- and believe them. You have hired talented people who really like working at making healthcare processes better.
