    Pros

Everyone pulled together to do the collective mission of their department. People took ownership of their job duties.

    Cons

Everything was eventually outsourced/offshored and people were laid off unfortunately. Not sure if anyone is left at BLM.

    Pros

I worked with great people and the job really taught me a lot personally. I also had a great manager.

    Cons

Upper management was not very good and being the newspaper business the company was not very stable as far as job security.

I have been working at Blue Lynx Media full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Casual work environment.
Lots of talk and action on employee engagement, employee input, employee ownership.
    Lots of growth potential.
    Great learning environment.
It is a continuous improvement driven leadership team.
The company has started focusing more on employee professional development.

    Cons

Challenges related to ongoing changes to the culture - lots of new emphasis on process improvement, employee ownership, etc. but that can be painful in the short term.
Possible unstable environment as parent company Tribune is just exiting bankruptcy. They could sell of portions of the company, or Blue Lynx could expand with new customers. Who knows. Lots of risk, but lots of up-side potential as well.

    Advice to Management

Continue with everything that we have been doing over the last six months. Things are all changing for the better.

I have been working at Blue Lynx Media full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The only good thing i can say is that its a check.

    Cons

    • Not an employ friendly environment
    • All profession aspirations are ignored and qualified people are passed over. Favoritism is the order of the day at Blue Lynx, very evident in the Credit/Collections department.
    • Managers are highly incompetent and utter useless. (Very evident in the Credit/Collections department.)
    • The managers do not encourage professional growth for fear of being respected by their more competent employees.
    • The managers are not working managers they have meeting to talk about the next meeting.
    • When something goes wrong the employee is blamed and then fired due to the poor leadership of the managers.
    • There is no such thing as leaving the company in good standing in hops you can one day return, according to the director “you had your chance at Blue Lynx media”
    • This company makes the parent company Chicago Tribune look very bad.
    • It is a low end call center and it is all do to the poor management staff.

    Advice to Management

Hire competent working managers with advance people and team building leadership skills.

    Pros

    -Great Central Location
    -Good work-life balance
-Senior Management is amazing at conveying company-wide changes and and anything else that affects their employees
-Ability to move around within different teams (eg: AP, Payroll, Receivables etc)
-Lots of employee appreciation efforts which can be nice (eg: parties, happy hours)

    Cons

-Lots of favoritism by team managers
-May have to deal with difficult employees from the business unit who you are essentially taking jobs from
-Dress Code is casual, sometimes too lax

    Advice to Management

Spend a little less money on employee appreciation efforts such as monogrammed M&M's on special holidays and a little more money on team manager training so that employees actually feel acknowledged and appreciated for their work.
