    Pros

    the people are fun to work with. Everyone gets along and there is a team spirit.

    Cons

    the hours required to work is unacceptable. expectation is 50 hours a week and more during crunch times (month end, qtr end, year end and during the months of Nov-March). The pay is far below industry standards. in meetings the mgmt. would say they are cheap. high turnover means more work for you to do. The weekend work, after hours work from home and even holidays was too much for me.

    Advice to Management

    its time to do something new. pay your people the correct wage. encourage work/life balance.

    Pros

    Good people who have worked at the company over the years but have since left. Good networks of past employees.
    Fun product.
    Good business model.

    Cons

    Turnover is high enough that it consistently impacts productivity, with no end in sight.
    Some homegrown managers and directors who have little to no management experience outside of Blue Nile
    No career development, no career ladder for those in customer service. The only exception I can think of was one group who developed their own program but the company doesn't have anything across all departments.
    Overall sense that the company is in decline and no longer is innovative, no clear vision or bold plans other than tactical plans.

    Advice to Management

    Find the right balance between micromanagement and too much talking, not enough action.
    Be bold and try more things. Don't kid yourselves on the real impact that some of your actions have on the company and its results, especially if it's only one small action.
    Work on culling out bad managers who hold the company back from its full potential.

    Choose a strategy and stick with it. Invest in employee development and infrastructure, and yes that means you will have to spend money.

    I worked at Blue Nile full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Some of the people there were great. Lots of lunch options in the area. Fun to work in fulfillment for a day or two around christmas.

    Cons

    More managers than peers. Lots of first-timers - kids out of college willing to work for peanuts because they don't know better. Lots of old-timers - people who were with the company from the beginning and care only about their stock options. As I was neither, they set me up on a project they use to eliminate people so they could bump their short-term financials and prevent me from vesting. I did a lot of interesting and useful work for them, but they treated me as disposable. If I wasn't a good fit for them, they could have simply told me instead of creating a ridiculous scenario over which to fire me.

    Their site looks unchanged from a decade ago. Their front-end code is ancient VB written by non-coders.

    Advice to Management

    Too many managers and junior engineers. Why not hire some pros and treat them well instead of creating a lords and serfs environment? If your engineer tells you a project is untenable, listen to them and move on. Treat people like people, not stepping stones.

    Pros

    Your expectations as an employee are cut and dry. If you can meet those, you will have no problems.

    Cons

    Chaotic internal structure. Management proved manic and at times unprofessional. Hours are completely up and down, and lunch hours aren't set in stone. *sometimes its 30 min sometimes they make you take an hour, so you can stay longer in the day). Pay is also fairly low.

    Advice to Management

    reduce stress on seasonal laborers, and you will have a better worker who is willing to go father.

    Only worried about the bottom dollar
    Employees or customers are not their top concern

    Advice to Management

    Leadership is definitely lacking in many areas: The founder has to be supported by a more mature leadership because he does lack immaturity. He's a shark in the business arena and the profit the company makes is more relevant to his bank account than to anyone else. A more mature management style would make it a healthier environment. Not a lot of growth because company is so small. The current CEO (Diane) is a much better public representation of what a CEO should be. She is the company's "Gem".

    Pros

    Health benefits are fairly good. Stock options can be useless depending on when you're hired due to peak seasons. Pretty laid back place as a software engineer.

    Cons

    Management tends to be deceitful. Expected of engineers to work more than 40 hours a week. Project definitions are generally very vague. No documentation for existing systems. Turn over is very high in most departments.

    Employee retention.

    I have been working at Blue Nile full-time

    Pros

    Benefits are lacking compared to other similar web-based companies. There is no drive to retain or promote employees from within, always sad to see good folks go on to other companies for career growth opportunities.

    Cons

    Lack of work/life balance. The company runs so lean that you feel guilty taking your paid time off. HR is hard to get a hold of for your questions... too busy planning culture events.

    Pros

    Great culture of people. Most employees are really nice, but there are a handful of bad seeds. Overall, it was a blast coming to work and chatting it up with all the friendly people.

    Cons

    I was never given specific projects to work on, instead I found work on my own to do. No clear direction. The office is located in a bad part of Seattle so you need to be cautious when coming and going.

    Advice to Management

    Be upfront with your employees. Don't let them know minutes before on their last day that you actually have another job for them to stay on to do. And when transitioning into a higher qualified position give them a raise!
