I have been working at Blue Plate Restaurant Co. full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Positive work environment, constant access to new experiences (Freehouse, Mercury, Blue Farm, etc.), David and Stephanie (Owners )are very approachable. Hours are flexible, tipping culture is great, and the guests are a fantastic lot.

    Cons

Incredibly high management turnover (save for a few constants) means that veteran employees end up running day-to-day while new management struggles to figure out proper scheduling/budget/etc. in the office. Very little standardized training, and what exists is poor.

    Advice to Management

Leave effective managers at the store they call home (unless they have expressed an interest in moving for personal or professional reasons). Get on board with the rest of the industry when it comes to online training and advancement within the company. Don't treat discounts as a sales-building technique.

    Pros

Corporate and upper management are great to work with and really care about you as a person. They have a vision for where they want to go in the future.

    Cons

Management at a store level leaves something to be desired. They don't have a detection on the best way to lead a team and get the best out of people.

    Advice to Management

Management on a store level needs to have more intensity and leadership.

I worked at Blue Plate Restaurant Co. full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Amazing atmosphere, employees are very close. The location is great and work is a lot quicker during the summer and fall. Good opportunity to learn.

    Cons

There isn't much room for growth so it is hard to stay motivated consistently. The winter is very slow. Make sure to keep that in mind.

    Advice to Management

Be careful in choosing the people you promote. A lot of people are desirable on the surface, and really negatively impact your company behind closed doors.

I worked at Blue Plate Restaurant Co. full-time

    Pros

Uptown Minneapolis location was always busy. Flexible hours. The neighborhood was diverse. Employee discount.

    Cons

    Management turnover:
-5 General managers in 4 years.
-Lost count of FOH managers. It's in the upper teens.
-Poor communication with staff regarding upcoming promotions and policy changes.
    Work Enviroment
-The uniform for females promotes harassment from customers and co-workers. When this was brought up to corporate they edited the training manual to remove the sexist verbiage and did nothing about the issue of harassment.
-Incidents where guest sexually harassed employees were ignored. Employees were told to deal with it, or "they are only here for a little bit."
-When harassment came from co-workers, a change of schedule was suggested.
-Poor recognition of employee accomplishments or contribution. Coorporate used to give out hams for Christmas and would sometimes buy a meal (no more than $12) for winning sales contests.
BPRC prides themselves in being a company that contributes to the community, which they do. They don't really treat their employees in a respectful way.
-Opportunities for advancement are limited to wether or not you can drink the company Kool-Aid.

    Advice to Management

-Recognize that your employees contribute to your success as much as your marketing strategies.
-Acknowledge that the ability to form healthy working relationships with your employee helps your company thrive.
-Your guests take notice when there are frequent changes to your leadership team.
-Your guests care more about your employees than you do.

    Pros

Upper management worked towards big improvements.

    Cons

Didn't feel as though working for a company that was bigger than just the one restaurant.
