    Pros

Compensation is very good, benefits are good, work locations are clean and bright. Management is trying to make improvements around culture but they have a ways to go. Their HR VP is trying to increase the number of women and minorities in Sr; Level Management which means there is opportunity. People are extremely nice and supportive.

    Cons

Since they are not publicly traded, all decisions in middle management take forever and are consensus driven. Even after a decision is made, because the organization has become so matrixed, nobody is held accountalbe for the decisions they make or deliverables they sign up for. Typical Corporate America, it is still who you know rather than what you know when it comes to advancement, but it is getting better.

    Advice to Management

Keep working on improving the culture, you are doing a good job so far. Please take a look at the operational monster you have built in IT supporting your new platform, you will need to speed up the development process in order to cut your costs going forward.

I have been working at Blue Shield Of California as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Flexible schedules, fun environment. Easy work. I received zero benefits because I'm a temporary worker but I hear they have excellent benefits.

    Cons

You have to be "in the know," (have a connection) to really move around. Favorites apparent from my first day.

    Advice to Management

Give people a chance to prove themselves before making judgments on their work.

I have been working at Blue Shield Of California full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

You can feel that the people who work at Blue Shield are passionate about what they do and the company is very mission driven. Blue Shield is also very transparent in HR decisions or other company wide successes/ issues. There are great employee resource groups and opportunities for employees, you just have to know where to look and put in in a little effort to be engaged. The facilities are generally nice (I've been to all the biggest offices), and in good locations.

    Cons

Bureaucracy and older technology. Many websites are blocked at work, and though I understand the reasoning, it is very annoying.

    Pros

Great people and culture. Some managers really do care about you as a person

    Cons

Large company makes you feel powerless. Many people don't bring value. Lots of meetings and very few people above the front lines that actually contribute.
